can O2 sensors go in headers by the collectors?

I am going to swap the low mile 5.0 from my stang into another car, and am using longish (not sure if they qualify as long tube) headers from Hooker. Can I weld O2 sensor bungs right in the header to ease installation? That way I can drive to the exhaust shop to fab the system after the new engine is in.

No....you've got to set them up a 4-6" away from the collector. The temps coming out of the exhaust right at the collector would fry your O2 sensors and shorten their life span dramatically.

Also, have them welded in between the 10 and 2 O'clock possitions, to keep the moisture out of them.

My long tubes have the bungs welded into the collector.....

I think the 4-6" rule is more of a guideline, as how far the collector is from the head IS a factor as well....

Sorry, let me clarify. They should be 4-6" from where the primaries merge into the collector, not necessarily from the end of said collector itself. Where the primaries merge, is the hottest spot in the exhaust path. Depending on the combination, EGT's could see up to 1600F at that spot. That’ll shorten the life of a set of O2’s in a hurry.
