I have a 93 LX 5.0 that originated in Canada. this car has an 85 mph speedo and the Km/h is smaller and more to the center in blue and goes to 140Km/h. I know all cars made for the states with the v8 were made with 140mph speedo. Does this sound like the speedo in the Canadian version?

V8's came with a 140MPH speedo, 4-cylinder cars came with an 85MPH speedo

All Canadian cars came with a speedo that reads Km/h larger than MPH. I think it went to 180 km/hr or something like that.

If your car is truely a Canadian Mustang, it seems like someone changed the gauge cluster to a 4-banger US Mustang style.

Or your car could have been originally a 4-banger??

I thought about that but the engine code is E and the dso is B7 and it has the sticker with the maple leaf placed on all Canadian cars.

Then someone definitely changed the cluster. Probably sometime after it was brought here.

Haha... Scott, my dash looks like that alot of the time too! Too funny..

Funny I have a buddy with an 89 LX notch, dash looks just like mine, and the one in the pic above BUT the speedo reads up to 220 KM/hr and IS the bone stock untouched original dash. The number are a tad smaller. He bought the car off the orig owner with 80000 KM and the guys auid that dash cluster was what the car came with when he bought it iff the car lot... I've never seen that b4.

Thinking about it, his notch was a NO option car like mine, I wonder if ones that were destined to become police patrol cars got that speedo and maybe his was just a leftover that got sold to the public?????

Sounds like the difference between the 85MPH and 140MPH speedos in the US -- same time frame, changed sometime in 89.

I'm a Canadian and have a 1990 5.0. That is a "Canadian" cluster for sure as the outer speed measurements are in km/hr and the inner are mph. However, on my 1990 5.0 the max number on the cluster is 220km/hr and the max for the US measurement was 140 MPH. I could be wrong, but it looks like your cluster was swapped out of a 1987-89 5.0 Mustang.

On my 1990 5.0, I'm a very conservsative driver and I always keep the needle on 120km/h. On my speedo, 120 km/hr and right at the top of the speedo. On your speedo, my 120km/h would be were your's reads somewhere between 90-100km/hr.

From 1990-1993, the cluster should have been the same throughout those years. If this is a 1993 cluster, then FORD just made the 1993 slower???????????????????

Why was the cluster replaced? A lame attempt to hide the real mileage on the car? OR, is your 1993 really, a 1993???????????????? Maybe, the last owner changed out the dash with the VIN and exchanged it for a VIN from a real 1993??????????????????

Someone with a Canadian 1993 needs to chime in here.

Buddy, go to www.gtamc.com. That's the local Mustang club here in Toronto Canada. Post there and ask. You'll get the correct info for sure!

In the US at least, the 4-cylinder cars of those years (post-89) still recieved 85MPH speedos, I suppose it could be similar in Canada???

So:

87-89 = 85MPH, 180KPH
89-93 = 85MPH, 180KPH - 4-cylinder
89-93 = 140MPH, 220KPH - 8-cylinder

Sound right?

I have a Canadian '92.
My cluster goes to 220, but there is a mark after that indicating 230.
It is a no options Coupe, well, GT interior package which is cruise, power mirros and nice seats/carpet.

I was just about to make a post about this... I just purchased a 5.0 87 LX Hatchback and it has a 85mph speedo. The MPH numbers are the larger numbers and when I plugged the VIN into carfax it properly shows up as a 5.0L V8 EFI HO OHV manufactured in the USA. Why then the 85mph speedo? Also, I noticed today in the engine compartment some notices were printed in both English and French... wtf?

Interesting enough, there is no information on the car prior to 1/6/2003 for the ownership history. It says here the estimated start date of the warranty was 5/6/1993... (but the car was 6 yrs old at that point) and in 1993 the car was in Jenison, MI.

Weird, can anybody figure this out? Pics of clusture below. Is there any way at all I can totally verify this? Is there a Canadian carfax?

All 87's in the US got that Speedo. If it was Canadian, the KM would be in larger numbers outside.

I can't explain it -- other than to say maybe dealer added??? Canadian cars do not (that I know of) come up in CarFax.

Ya thats what I was thinking. Oh well it's a clean car and I like it. Eventually I'll treat it right with a 140mph cluster. For now I'll just wait patiently at the dragstrip for a slip verifying speeds over 85!

There is no Canadian Carfax, however, there is a Canadian used car buyers package where all you need is $20 and you go to a kiosk and punch in the VIN and you get your car history printed up.

All Mustangs were built in Detroit. It could be possible that those stickers were added on in the factory as it was assumed the car may have been destined for sale in Canada and then sold in the US instead. Or, a previous owner bought the stickers from say 50resto and just stuck them in, who knows. Your cluster is American though as the km's are in the inner radius.
