me and dad went for a ride in my car yesterday and i let dad drive it cause i wanted his opinion on how it was running. well we were pretty much hauling some serious ass and were getting on the interstate and hit a patch of water on the top of the acceleration lane. the car came around and smashed tail first into a tree.
i have a question. has anyone ever bought there car back from the insurance company when they total out the car? how much did it cost to buy back?

A lot of times they will not make you "buy it back" they just will not give you any money for the damages.

yeah, but i can't hold it over him. it could have been worse, we coulda went nose first into the tree.

so the insurance companies usually don't let you buy it back?

Try to be there when the estimator is doing his thing. Most people I know have had the option to buy it back. Some of my friends have even got the better end of the deal. They got to remove all their mods that made it and then they took the car. Really depends on the insurance guy.

get it estimated(total loss) then strip it down before the scrap yard comes to get it--3 days max so be ready to roll on it. then sit back and collect your check.

or they will let you buy it back for typically 10% of the totalled value.

When my car got broken into and vandalized they called it a total loss. They gave me 7,000 for the car and then i bought it back for 1,100. So i got my car and 5,900 bucks. Easily enough to fix the damage and buy some new mods . They over estimate things so much.

I was able to buy back my 90 really cheap from the insurance and then resell the drivetrain to a guy building a cobra kit car. It's definately worth a shot if you think you can resell some of the parts for more.

i hope they over estimate my car also. i could afford to buy another 95 or a fox and keep my parts if that happens.

even if they give you the money for the totaled car, its law that they have to give you the option to buy it from them (which you would be stupid not to)....and its usually pretty cheap.

My friend just wrecked (he got hit) in his 98 GTP.....Insurance totalled it and paid him 7500.00 and he bought the car back for 600.00. He has already ordered the new hood / fenders/ and trunk........I teased him because we have a 99 GTP and when I met him at the accident I told him I wanted the S/C for a spare for ours......salvage title means @#$% to me as long as a car is put together right but hard to sell and finance.....good luck

When mine got totalled, they first identified the value of the car and told me that they would salvage the car and give me a check for that amount minus my deductible, or they would give me my car and a check for its worth MINUS what they would get at an auction. I ended up with about $6,500 and my car...only reason they totalled it was those dern expensive airbags...I think the differenence was $1000.

That was progressive by the by.

reading all this gives me hope either way i am getting all my parts out of the car. but i would like to get a fair amount from the insurance company. my pops figures a 4000 kelly blue book value. so i am kinda assuming that would be the absolute most i would get for it. dad said he'd give 4000 for it also, but i don't want to take it from him.

Sounds like your dad is more upset about it than you are. Make sure that you make it clear that you want your car back. The good thing is, it's in your driveway. I've heard of people having a HELL of a time getting their car out of the possesion of the tow company. You can just buy a nice little 6 cyl car and put your stuff in it. That might be easier than trying to fix the broken one. Good luck. Let us know how it works out for you.
