Car running rough

So coming home today my car started to really spit and sputter, it has absolutely no power in the lower range from 1000-2500 rpm. It is running pretty horrible to say the least. This happened all of a sudden like someone flipped a switch, when i was driving today. Any suggestions what it might be, coil over gone bad? possible the alternator?

No check engine light?

1st...Make sure the coils are tight. Also check all hoses and make sure one hasn't come loose. Did the engine bay get wet recently?

No the engine didn't get wet and there is no check engine light, also i just used my programmer to check for any codes that may be goin off and nothing. Its raining now so i can't check anything but it wasnt' when this occured, car has a little over 60k on the odo, i just did an oil change on it less then 100 miles ago, car was low on gas when this started but i went and filled up and same result. I always use the same fuel, shell vpower, so i don't think it is bad fuel. I have a multimeter, anyone know how to check the coils to see if they are producing the voltage they should be?

If it happened suddenly something came lose somewhere. Although a coil pack could be the culprit you will usually get a CEL and a misfire code to the related cylinder. If no code pops up in the next day or so you might want to replace the fuel filter. Might have picked up some trash and it will cause some real fonky power issues.

I noticed that it runs fine when the car is cold and get progressively worse as it warms up

go to napa ad get a chemical block check, it wuld be best to rule out a blown headgasket before you go spend money and time trying ther things.

I don't think i have a blown head gasket, because it does not cut out all the time, mainly when i accelerate and i am around 1200-1500 rpm. It just misses a quite a bit. I'm goin to take the plugs out tomorrow to check my plugs and see if one has any build up on the plug, and it is prolly a coil gone bad, at least that is what a mechanic i talk to said would be a good place to start

running very rough

I have had the same issue lately. It started only the gas tank was low and it wouldnt let the rpm's get above 3000, but not it is so bad it is stalling,spitting and sputtering and not to mention EMBARRASSING. (bad spelling I know) I have gave it a new fuel filter,plugs,air filter and even cleaned the carbon from the throttle body. Now I'm just confused. Do you think it could be a coil pack?

Did you change the IAC valve? They usually give idle issues but it could be affecting regular driving. Try cleaning it 1st to see if the issues clear up.

One bad coil would cause a miss but not to the point where the car would stall. You have other issues there.

I had it put on the computer and had a shop check it out. only thing found was #1 and #5 coil pack was mis firing and the fuel pressure had a very slight variance under load.(but this is normal with the machs isnt it?). I replaced both coil packs. It ran great for a week or so then same old thing. only common thing that I could find was each time the tank was below a 1/4.
do you think the IAC would affect the running under load? I guess I am kind of grasping at straws.

The IAC is about the only thing I didnt change. Had it put on a computer though and it showed the #1 and #5 cylinder was misfiring. I replaced the coil packs and it ran great for a while and back to the same old thing.
The only common thing is the tank is always less thahn a 1/4 full.
this is only a guess though. Im dropping the tank today and cleaning it just to make sure there isnt any junk in the gas to give it a starvation thing.

Ive heard that it could be the fuel pump. because it generally starts to act up at 1/4 tank or below. Ive had the same issue before on a different car. does this sound right?

This is the worst advice I have heard in a long long time. A blown head gasket is not very common in these cars. And if he DID have a BHG, the car would most likely overheat, poor white smoke out the exhaust, and the cylinders would be filled with coolant. Plus he just changed the oil, so he probably would have noticed a milky oil during that time. A blown head gasket would pretty much be the worst case scenario. You need to rule out small hypothesis first such as bad spark plug, IAC, COP etc before you come to conclusions like "I JUST THREW A ROD!" or "I JUST BLEW A HEAD GASKET!!"

Yes, if it's missing, it's most likely a spark plug/COP issue.
