As for the battery being OK, only way to tell is test it. That or just give it a good slow overnight charge and see if it'll hold that charge over time. I'll bet that the battery's charge state is your problem. Solenoids do wear out, but not that often. Batteries wear out much faster. If that battery is 8 years old, I'd doubt it's still up to snuff.
