Evening / Morning Stangers,
Getting ready to put the ole ’85 back on the road, and all of the items listed in the sig are complete. After a quick blast down the road I discovered a dramatic hesitation when I stomp on it. This hesitation can also be replicated at idle.

A little history …
The car has been sitting for close to 10 years in my garage. Prior to that it was a daily driver. At that time, circa 1997, the crate motor was dropped in and the factory Holly was sent to Pony Carburetors, rebuilt reinstalled and performed very well.

The question is this – Because this car will again become a daily driver and I need to pass the confiscatory Maryland emissions, is there a replacement carburetor in the 600cfm range that I can purchase? I checked with Edelbrock and they advertise a 600cfm that is not emission legal.

FWIW – I am not discounting sending the carb back to Pony and having them rebuild it. I do not have the skill / time / patience to rebuild this on my own.

Thanks for any and all guidance.

what is wrong with the carb now? Maybe it doesn't need any rebuild...

If you are looking for a replacement for smog, there is only one way to go, and that is the Holley remanufactured one. You can get them at summitracing.com I got mine there, but be prepared, I had to send mine back because it started leaking gas externally and internally. They got it back to me and it works properly except the idle mixture screws turn on their own from road vibrations. I am not spending more money on shipping just for them to fix that so I will have to fix that myself.

Basically, they take the factory setup, rebuild it, but install a different baseplate that has only front idle mixture screws, instead of the BS 4 corner stuff on the factory ones. It comes with 59 jets. I smogged real nice with it.

A significant hestitation <=1500 rpm.

Not completely positive the carb needs rebuilding, I am going to have it looked at later today. I just wanted to get a plan together in case the carb has indeed gone tango-uniform.

I checked out the Summit smog legal carb (HLY-64-3609). Sux that you had so many issues with yours, we’ll see how it goes.

Thanks for the reply.

I forgot to mention in my original post to check for vacuum leaks since the car has been sitting so long. Some of the hoses could have been chewed through or just rotted.

Sorry, I also had a memory relapse of your hesitation problem :-\ If you do go with the factory replacement from summit, let me know how yours turns out.
