I'm getting my hands on a 85 gt that needs a new motor, i'm thinking of just getting a new 302efi crate engine, was wondering if there is anything else that i will need to do the swap from carb to efi if I am getting a whole new motor....

fuel system

u will need the hole fuel system off a efi car gas tank and all the wiring to run the efi and its fuel system. efi cars fun a high pressure 39-42 psi are carb 5-7 psi. i would just stay with the carb u r going to be spending lots of money. the only wy i think u could do it cheaper is to just get a wrecked efi car

Tons of work to gain 10hp and a more expensive engine to work on and mod.

Well don't get me wrong, that is just my opinion. Don't fix what isn't broken right? Now, if you plan on running a turbo or blower, maybe i could see why you'd switch (although a blowthrough carb setup is simple to do...i'd prefer EFI with boost myself). The '85 GT was rated at 210hp, whereas the '87 was 225hp. In a car vs. car race it would come down to the driver or maybe even the '85 for weighing a couple hundred pounds less.

If you wanna learn about carbs...there are tons of resources out there. Holley offers a great tuning DVD that completely simplifies things like jet changing and float level setting so that your mother could handle doing it. Plus there's tons of books and tons of other websites out there.... Carbed Ford Message Board :: Home is one of my personal favs...lots of smart guys over there. When you get started with modding things, just do your homework and don't listen to the Camaro owner up the street who tells you to put an 850 double pumper on it..lol
