Carbon Monoxide?

Mods are H/C/I and dyno tune.

Long tubes, no cats.

At idle the car will smell like a semi trailer. It floods the area with scent of exhaust fumes in seconds.

Am I in any real danger? I think it gives me a headache but it could be psychological. If i roll up the windows and turn on the AC i wont smell it but then again i cant smell CO. I am just worried, health first.

My car smells relly strong too. I used to get headaches when I first bought the car but I don't anymore. I'm not sure if there are any real dangers though. I usually drive with the windows open to keep fresh air flowing inside. I'm sure you'll be fine.

Well yeah, CO is odorless. But getting a headache from exhaust fumes is normal for me. It is your body's way of telling you not to breathe that stuff in.

Do you have dumps or something? The lack of cats certainly does not help, nor does idling in the garage or any enclosed space.

when i never idle it in my garage or said i did.. but even out in the open within seconds everyone within a 30 foot radius can smell raw exhaust. I thought of lowering my FP but i know it wont matter because the pulsation of the injectors will keep the same amount of fuel flowing if pressure is decreased, hence problem unsolved. I dont know what to do, its really strong.

If you have a blow through mass air like a c & l you can rotate it toward the motor a little and it will lean out at idle, turn away from motor and it will riching. Put some high flow cats on and the smell will get better

Didnt mean to imply that you do idle the car in an enclosed space. Only to say that it was to be expected in that situation. But out in the open, that is a little strange.

oh ok gotcha.

I dont wanna get a new H pipe because than ill need to re-install my smog pump so the cats wont get clogged after long term use. I wish there was a way i could solve this.

You are most likely smelling excessive HCs (hydrocarbons). What does your set up consist of? What are cam specs, injector size, etc.

You've got that backwards, towards to motor fattens up the mixture as it sees more air flow, towards to fender leans it as it sees less air. 2 issues ago of MM&FF or 5.0 Mustang showed that with a dyno tune.

Heads are AFR165s
Cam is 221/225 @ 0.05"
0.499"/0.512" lift
24 lbs injectors
It was dynoed and tuned to a 12.8:1 A/F steady

It just smells really strong at idle. Could it be the 93 octane.

OK....I read your list of mods from your link. I suppose it is all updated.

1. Fuel pressure is at 42# with vac line off or on?
2. What is your TPS voltage set at?
3. Are you using an add on chip/tuning device or the stock ecm?

Have you taken your car to get your exhaust gases analyzed (an emissions testing facility..go to a private shop to have them put it on the machine in "test" mode) to see what amounts of HC, CO2, CO, and NOx. This can sometimes help figure out where the issue is.

I have this same issue so I know exactly what you are talking about with horrid smell. Cats will clear it up for sure but in my case I had my exhaust gases checked to find that I have excessive amounts of HCs (unburned fuel) causing the smell. If I put the cats on, smell is totally gone but cats overheat like mad. So I have to get the HC issue under control somewhat b4 I put cats back on or I just will ruin them. I haven't figured why I have high hydrocarbons at idle yet but I am working on it. My set up is a little different than yours but nevertheless sounds like the same problem.

Did you have offroad h- pipe on and smog pump bypassed prior to cam and head swap? At that time did your exhaust smell reasonable?

Nothing yet. Im going to try rotating the MAF as previously mentioned.

And my fuel pressure is actually a lot less than 42#. when the car was dyno tuned the fuel pressure was turned down to like 34-35 with the line off.
