So Friday night I went off campus to have a few beers and then I planned on driving back to campus. Well when I went to leave my car wouldn't start. The fuel went and a "click" when I turned the key. I actually slept in my car for an hour until my buddies came back from the bar, so they could help me out. I posted the problem Friday morning and I got lots of responses back. I went over again today to try some of the ideas yous all gave me, I checked the wiring, I cleaned the battery terminals, I tapped the starter, but it still didnt start. I wanted to get it on flat ground since I had it parked on a hill. I got four of my buddies to push it up the hill so then I could coast into a lot. Let me tell ya, I dont know if yous are formally with the hills in Bethlehem, but they are steep. When I got it in the lot I tried it and I got a crank. We then pushed it back and then tapped the starter again and it started. Let me tell ya, I was the happiest sob around. I mean having my car stuck since Friday night in Bethlehem to have it back here on campus where I can just walk up to it and see it-WOW, man it feels good. Funny story driving back to campus, "Dream On" came on the radio, I was dreaming of driving back for days. Thanks to everyone who helped me out, especially my buddy who was there this afternoon...just so happens that he has a 87 IROC, cant **** on the chevys as much anymore. ****, American built is better than those foreign rice burners!! HO-AAH!!!

It sounds as if you never really pinpointed the problem. If that's correct... keep tools with ya until you do. It'll probably rear it ugly head the next time you least expect it. If it were me... I'd screw a spare solenoid into the engine bay and swap the starter for the hell of it. Worst case scenario is that if neither of those components ends up being the real problem that you would at least have the ability to crank the thing over strong with good parts just by shorting across the solenoid (assuming something upstream of the solenois is actually at fault).

i would do more than "tap on it" smacking it with a hammer will free up the cog wheel which when it stick's usually means it is about gone......if u have a starter button or even a old junky screw driver you can test just the starter it's self........all you need to do it branch the screw driver across the 12v exciter wire and the pos lead......and it should crank...but sparks will fly.......i use this method at work to check if a relay or selonoid or even ign switch might be going bad.....but be carefull when messing with hot battery cables i have seen starters catch on fire and BURN up...........damn german starters...........

i planned on getting a new starter, because this isnt the first time this happened. the first time i just kept at it and it started, so i think im gonna get a new starter. so then i dont have to worry about getting a new solenoid since that comes with the starter, right?

a sig is wonderful to help people diagnose problems. if you have a fox, the starter solenoid is on the fender (separate). if you have an SN, it is piggybacked on the starter.

good luck.

IF you have a fox, then yes.. replace the starter solenoid while you're at it. It's also required for warranty purposes on the Starter... It's only 15 bucks and cheap insurance
