Cars Vs. Girls....

So with the thread BDT has going on, it got me thinking of problems I've had in the past. I often refer to my mustang as the girl in my life that won't ever lie, cheat or steal from me, always stands by my side when I'm broke or upset, doesn't get jealous when I go out with others or spite me either.

But, has anyone else ever had a problem with the other loves of your lives getting jealous of the four legged metal object? Am I the only one who has heard the line "you care more about that damn car than you do about me" ? Surely I can't be alone.

I don't think it's fair, but I can see where they get the idea. Sure if I get paid 400 on a Friday, I could bring her to dinner that night.... but why not buy that real nice set of rockers you want. Now of course I don't actually do that as I care much more for her... but it's still a source of grief in my life.

That’s why I broke up with my x girlfriend. I spent all my time and money in high school on my vert, and all that girl did is complain about it, I wouldn’t go out at night because i was too busy with my friends working on that car, spent all my money time and energy on the car and she didn’t like it, so i solved the problem. Never had to make a decision again about what to do on Friday night

my name says it all.

My wife accepts me and my hobbies, just as much as I accpept her and her hobbies.

She knows that when I have a bad day, I can go out into the garage, light up the torch and make something or do something to the car and that will help me detox before I come in and we get in a fight.

my wife complains about my car all the time but she also understands that i've had it for 23 years and i've only had her for 9 years.

Well I think you all have found the wrong girls. my wife of 20 years appreciates my hobby, understands when I want to go for a "drive" and often joins me.

We often take road trips together, most of the show and shines we do together and I can occasionally get her to help in the garage.

about the only thing we argue about is should we drive my '65 or her '06, ......
maybe that has something to do with her interest in the hobby

P.S. the kids are into it now too. two daughters and one has a mustang, and the other is looking for a mustang

well my wife really just complains about the money i spend on the car not really the car itself so much. of course i have spent quite a bit of money on the restoration and we don't have a lot of money anyway.

I'm with you Bnickel. My wife told me the other day "You know, it probably would have been cheaper to buy a new 05/06 Mustang than your restoration.

GREAT! NOW she tells me after I have untold pints of blood into this one, and it only going to get worse.

Sometimes I feel guilty coming home, changing, and then going into the Grarage until bedtime. Especially since we have a 16 month-old and another one the way. Overall, though, my wife understands that I need to have some "duh" time where I am just mindlessly working on something and it doesn't take meetings, schedules, office politics, etc...

My last girlfriend loved mustangs and even she pulled the "you love your car more than me" routine.

As for her... lets just say my car never cheated on me or let me down... and my car is still here

So as you already knew from the other replies, you are not alone lol

Not to mention, you got custody of the kids ( ) and she took the car..!

I have an ex-gf who "couldn't wait" for me to get sally on the road (she wanted to drive her......like THAT was gonna happen), when she dumped me for a kid ten years her junior, talked him into selling his flaming chicken and buying a brand new '95 'stang (which she drove, leaving him w/ her POS Escort!)

My wife keeps nagging at me about my car too.

"When are you going to paint it? It would sure look good all one colour."

or,

"Can't we take your mustang? It'll burn less gas than the truck and we'll fit in the parkade."

My wife hates my car and would love for me to sell it, but she knows that I love it and it makes me happy, and so she's cool with it. She doesn't like to ride in it but has no problem with me going out for a cruise or hooking up with friends for shows or rallys. My 2 daughters love the car and think it's cool so we'll see if they change their opinion when they grow up and take after their mom. And my wife definitely would like me to stop spending money on the car, but that's not going to happen and she knows it.

After 33 years of togetherness, my wife knows we will get through any problems with ease. On the '66, yea, we could have bought a new one for the money but both of us have a blast with the "old" car. Just got the '00 Vert and she actually lets me drive it for work and she sticks with the '01 F150 Lariat 4X4. When she does drive a Mustang, it is all smiles and she really understands my need for working on them. Got a great woman here.

No Stang around here, but my wife grumps regulalrly about the Big Bad Cat:
"When are you gonna get the Cougar on the road?"
"Okay, you bought the parts; why haven't you started on it? What else do you need to get?"
"When can we get that car on the road?"

Okay; you guys are all ready to at me. What you don't know is that she's forgotten how these projects tend to take on a life of their own! And that, once I get started, I'm not gonna want to stop for piddly little crap like yard work and house repairs.

thats me lol i spent tons of money, spent long hours on weekends tring to get her going just so i could drive her the next day. i think most all car guys have heard that famous "you love the car more then you love me" line. i got rid of the girl too! i got one now that completly understands and is helping me save money to buy an 03 mach.

Amen, Brother SD! My car projects tend to move along at a snail's pace. But, that's okay. I knew that would be the case when I bought the car in March. We both have dependable DD's that we own, so no car payments and no lack of transportation when the Mustang is "partially disassembled."

In the past, I've "been there" w/ the girls vs. cars scenario. But, I must say, my wife is pretty understanding. I try not to take advantage of that understanding, though. We have a 2-year-old and both work long days, so we share baby duties.

I spent nearly every waking moment on my mustang for about two months one summer while I struggled with doing my Tremec swap. The last week I was really hammering on it trying to get it done. So it was like I'd leave work at 4pm, change clothes, go climb under the car and wrestle with the tranny until about 10:30 (when the roaches started crawling around the dirt lot I was working on), take a shower, eat something, and climb in the bed.

My girlfriend didn't seem too concerned until the day I finally finished. I walked in at 6pm, showered, ate, and promptly turned on the x-box to play some Halo. That when she got upset. She wanted some her time since she'd patiently waited for me to finish my tranny swap without complaining about me spending all my time with my car.

I offered to let her help me next time, but she said she saw how dirty I was every night and declined my offer. Needless to say I turned of the x-box and sat on the couch with her that night. She was happy after that. We're married now, and she helps me work on the cars every now and then. I think I found a good one.
