I am trying to decide between a D&D T-56, G-Force T-5 or a TKO 600. I will put it a 331 with a Novi-2000 which should be making at least 600rwhp. I heard that the TKO's were notchy from many people. Haven't heard any negatives about the T-56. My concern with the G-Force is the use of the stock case. I heard that G-Force makes a heavy duty case for T-5's so I emailed them. This is their response:

No, we don't have a heavy duty case available. We are working on
designing
the castings. They will not increase the horse power rating; just strengthen
the bearing bores with more material. We are projecting the price to be
around $250.
Thanks,
Mark

A member here, zenboy99 stated that Tim Matherly uses a G-Force and is running 9's with it. Is the stock case a legitament concern of mine? Is mainshaft flexing what causes the case to break? If so I think the upgraded mainshafts would solve the problem. Any input would be greatly appreciated and help me and possibly many others with their tranny desicions.

No offense to anybody who has a G-force. Some people love them and others are having a hell of a time. It seems like a hit or miss. I heard another horror story besides this one on here a little while ago. Something like it costed him 200 dollars a mile he went 10 miles and the tranny crapped out on him. G-force would not except his return saying it was a users error.

I'm not saying G-force is bad by any means. They are working great for some people. I would research alot before you order one though.

The best of the best manual tranny you can buy is a Viper spec'd T56. But it will cost you alot of money. Something like 3500 bucks. It's basically Bulletproof. T56's arent for stock 5.0's but your gonna be pushing 600HP. I think this is the way to go.

You could buy a Ford T56 but it's not the same as the Viper. But its still a T56.

My TKO 500 is a little more notchier than my stock T5. But it likes to get power shifted. I considered a G-force but just saw to many negative reviews for my taste.

forget the t5z. It's just another thinly disquised t5. gforce or tremec are your real only true choices. Powershift that t5z, and it'll blow just as quickly.

Well I'm a bit bias in my liking of the D&D Viper T56 :D but it is a lot of cash and IMO isn't the best drag race tranny. It takes some getting use too. When i add the cost of my tranny, Pro 50 shifter, steel bell, and twin disc clutch, well it's pretty scary. But is strong. :nice: If I were you I may look into the TKO 600 and the C103 clutch D&D sells as well. One thing about the viper t56 is the gearing is quite a bit softer 2.66/1.78/1.30/1.00/.74/.50 compared to my old t5's 3.35 1.99 1.33 1.1 0.68. My first thought when I put mine in on my old 460 rwhp combonation was, "out with the 3:73's and in with the 4.10-4.30's) I definately noticed a seat of the pants differance with the softer gearing. But again the fix to that is just a gear swap away :D Call Don Walsh Sr. at www.ddperformance.com and see what he recommends for your car and overall goals you have. Can't find a nicer group of guys :nice:

This isn't the first time I heard that the T-56 is not a good drag racing trans. Why? What makes it not a good trans for drag racing? There is an available 2.97 first gear from D&D and G-Force offers a 2.98 first gear.

IMO it's just a tight tranny. with the 6 spd there isn't as much forgiveness and it seems you really need to be on the mark when banging gears. So if your trying to power/speed shift right off the bat you may find yourself missing a few gears for a while :) But once you get use to it I'm sure you'd be fine. There are plenty of Viper owners out there smashing gears through them but it's definetly different if your use to a T5.

As far as the 2.97 first gear.. that is for a standard NON VIPER T56. All the Vipers have a 2.66 first and an extra 210 lbft of torque capacity over them.
