if it's a factory keyless entry system, the '96's DID NOT use the stupid on/off routine. There is a wire in the trunk behind the LH side panel, it comes right out of the keyless entry module, you have to ground this loose wire then hit the button on the remote for it to learn the transmitter i.d. If there is no module back there behind the LH trunk panel you probably have dealer installed keyless. The module for this is usually mounted under the column, there should be a programming button somewhere under the dash.

before you try reprogramming it, ARE YOU SURE you have the batteries installed right? Just changing the batteries shoud never require re-programming.

Is this wire already connected to something? There are 2 boxes mounted on the left inner quarter (one says "PORTABLE" on it). I was told to look for a 2 pin connector and jump the pins. The only 2 pin connector I see goes from one box to the other, but there are 2 small wires that are also attached so something.

BTW: I have a 96 GT and the remote didn't work when I bought it. They said the batteries were bad, so I replaced them...still nothing.

EDIT:

Here is a picture of the two boxes. I circled what I think are the wires. You can see that the black is grounded and the red is in a connector with the green (I'm not sure if it's actually "spliced" in the connector or not). I'm pretty sure these are the correct wires, but I don't want to just disconnect them without knowing.

Anybody have any ideas???

If someone could just take a picture of their module in the trunk I think that would help me at least a little bit so I could compare. I think it has to be a 96-98 model though.

Thanks,
Mike

well, looking at that pic I don't see what should be the keyless entry module. According to my Ford service manual it should be behind the LH trunk panel, and there is a loose pigtail with two wires in the connector. You short the wires with the key on and the locks will cycle when you do so. once the locks cycle you hit a button on all the remotes you want to use, then remove the jumper.

Looking at that pic, although i've never seen the module on that year of Mustang, I don't see any jumper that looks like the one they have in the service manual.

It is possible that like my '96 GT your Mustang doesn't have FACTORY keyless entry, all the instructions that I have been giving are for FACTORY keyless entry. like my '96 i have DEALER installed keyless, which is a whole different animal.

surely SOMEBODY here has programmed their factory setup and can verifiy if one of those modules in that pic is the RKE module.
