changing rod bearings with motor in car.

can i change the rod bearings with the motor in the car. how difficult is this. what do i need to do. my motor started knocking with 35000 miles on it. i was told it was the rod bearings. the motor cant be that worn out. i did run it too long on an oil change and it was 2 quarts low so i guess that would do it.

to drop the pan you need to drop the k-member. its easier to pull the motor honestly. also if theres rod bearing damage, there could be other damage as well.

you are going to want to check the main bearings, not just the rods. And you may need to pull the crank. Much easier to just pull the motor.

i had a spun bearing and it was knocking bad. i continued dragging it with NOS and it only got worse... even then the only apparent damage was to that particular bearing that was spun. although i am not saying you will be as lucky. i replaced everything with forged internals. because it was a good opportunity since i had the car all apart. i certainly suggest what these guys say, at least replace the other bearings. for all the more work it is to do the main bearings. its worth it!

the crank will most likely need to be turned if the engine was knocking.itis best to pull the whole engine
