Hey All,
I bought a 1994 Mustang GT 5.0L 5spd. 3 months back.
The old owner said he just replaced the alt. and batt.
3-4 weeks ago this problem started, where it would stop charging while I was driving. After a little driving it would kick back on. Its been doing that now for about two weeks off and on really bad. It happen in the begining and when I revved it up like 4k-5k rpm it would kick on. Now when the batt light comes on and the volt gauge drops no matter what I do it stays on and doesnt charge. I have put a multimeter on it to make sure it wasnt charging. When the light comes on it will show 10-12 volts. when its working fine it shows a little over 14.
When the light comes on and it stops charging it will usually come back on after 1/2 hr of driving, or I have to park it let it cool completely down and it will be fine. I have checked the engine ground from engine to batt, batt is good. Any help would be great. Car has 108k miles. All stock.
I will check the wire going from the starter solenoid tonight, someone said that may be burned.

Thanks all

When it stops charging it does it for long periods of time, even at idle.
And I checked the belt its not slipping.

sounds like a fault in the alternator or regulator. I had one rebuilt and it was missing a bolt inside which was a main grounding bolt. worked fine off and on but then totally crapped out one day. the local parts place should be able to test the alternator.

Robert, you dont have a starter solenoid like aero foxes [per se]. What you checked was the alternator power connection at the PDC.

Check the regulator wiring - it vulcanizes badly under the SN hood. If you peel (or chip) the wire loom off, you might find bare wires. Bumps or IR issues might be causing the alt to go in and out.

Also, be SURE you check the alt fuse in the underhood fusebox (it's like a 20 amper). Be sure it fits the terminals tight. They get loose and then have bad connections. This fuse is part of the sense circuit and if the connection is bad, the alt will shut off.

You could have the alt load tested. Have it done repeatedly to heat the alt up.

Good luck.

I'm with hisson, sounds like a bad connection. I would also check under the fuse block that is under the hood, I have seen some get corrosion under there where the wires are making the connection. It also maybe an internal fault but a slim one. If all the connections look good and the alt checks out it could also be bad spot in the wiring itself, bypass the stock wiring and run some new stuff and just redo it.
