Ok, I bought a 1993 mustang LX 2.3 . The alternator went out on the way home, but I put another battery in and got her home.(just on the battery). I went and bought a new alternator, put it on and it will not charge. So I took it back to have it tested. Turn's out it's fine. So then I checked the fuse link's there all good to. Is there a breaker that goes to the gharging circit? Checked all wires going to alternator,there fine. NOW WHAT?

Check/Replace the battery cables.

Try this, will it start on its own?? IF not Jump it, and then take the negitive batt cable off the batt, if it stays running, then its good, take the batt to Autozone or where ever and have it tested...

Battery cables are new. double checked to make sure! It will start with no problem but the alternator is not charging the battery. Therefor when the battery runs out of juice the car dies. So it's not charging.

I've delt with a few Alt problems similar to this but on different vehicles. If you know the bat, cables, alt and fuses are good then you should begin looking at the wiring or plugs. Get a manual with your schematics and trace the wires. I'm not to familiar with your wiring I have an 85 with an 89 Mustang harness in it which is different or I would point you to the ares the problem may be at. I have read about the plugs on the Alts going bad perhaps this is the issue. Could just be corroded connections as well. The Alt expects 12v when the ignition is on to charge, if it doesn't get it it won't charge. This is where I would look first.

still no luck with my charging problem. I have checked everything. When I unplug the battery the car dies. I got an 80 amp alternator, could this be posible the problem? I dont think so. Any one got any ideas? I will check the wiring harnes one more time.

i had the same problem mine was ther is a green wire that went to my starter relay the wire had come loose i fixed it and that solved my problem hope this helps.

80 amp alt...no that's not the problem. You need to get a schematic and figure out which wire is the 12V Switched lead and ensure it has power when the key is on. If you know the alt is good then this could be the reasons its not working. Nothing would be telling the alt to charge.... If you have power to the switched lead then it is either the stator wire or the Field wire. Trace them and ensure they are connected and that you do not have an open circut on them.

This is from my own 2 week experience in dealing with bad batteries, bad alternators and not starting only 3 days after purchasing my 89LX.

-If your Alt goes bad it puts a lot of strain on the battery. Replace the alternator and yay!

-Except now the battery has a lot more wear on it from dealing with the bad Alt then it ever should have. Now your new alternator is having to kick its own butt in having to keep up with a bad battery and it dies again.

-Solution: Replace both the Alternator and the Battery at the same time and jump for joy.

the problem might also be that the alt gauge itself crapped on you i've had this happen on an 86 Stang before,also is there an external voltage regulator,or is the reg. internal,meaning built into the alternator .don't know what year your's is there's also a fuseible link buy the starter sseliniod for the chargeing system check that as well hope I've helped.Art

The voltage regulator is made inside the alternator. Also the alternator gauge does not work, when I turn my key to start it the battery light on the insturment panel does not come on. It worked when I bought the car. Does anyone have the wiring schematics on the charging circut? It is a 1993 LX. hatch. Thank's

Make sure your ground to the alt is good... seen that cause the same probs a few times

Now I am charging, A bad transistor on the back of my instrument cluster. Thank's for the help everyone.
