It comes on and goes off when it pleases. When I got the car the guy said the gas cap caused a CEL before, but he replaced it and it went away, so I thought it might be the off-road H pipe that was in there. I put the stock exhaust back in so I could pass emissions, and while I was cruising around putting more miles on my new clutch, it came on again. Car seems to run fine and all, but I want to know whats up. My rx-7 had a plug you could jump and it would flash the CEL and tell you codes, same with my friends prelude. I was wondering if there was any sort of easy way to pull codes on the car, or if I have to take it somewhere to have them pull the codes for me. BTW it's a 96' GT. If I do in fact need to bring it somewhere to get the codes pulled, which is the place that does it for free? Advanced Auto or Autozone or something? Thanks for the help.

AutoZone will pull the codes for free or you can put your dashboard in diagnostics mode to display codes.

Go to an auto parts store, dont know what kind you have around you, but like autzone or advanced auto parts or something like that ...i have murrays auto around here. They will pull the codes for you, post them in here and then we can help you a little bit more. But trying to figure out what the problem is with a check engine light without having the codes would be more difficult than necessary.

I've got a 96...

I went to AutoZone, they checked it and the guy told me it said emissions. I'm guessing probably an O2 sensor or something?

That's all he told you. You'll need the actual code # to even begin to figure out the problem. Don't assume it's the 02 sensor. It could be something else. 02 sensors aren't cheap. Have him give you the actual code and we can go from there. Pearl02.

Actually one quick question before driving all the way back there. The previous owner said he got a CEL for his gas cap a while back, and when he replaced it, it went away. Would the gas cap come up as an emissions code?

Yes it would.

Ford thought the gas cap was so important to keep in check that they removed the "Low coolant" light from the bottom right of the gauge cluster and substituted a "Check Gas Cap" light on the 01-04 Mustangs

Way to go ford. I have no way to know if i'm low on coolant but if my gas cap is ever not screwed in right they got me covered
