I need some more opinions. I bought an install kit, speedo gear, and 3.55 gearset all from one guy on ebay. Everything is great except something on the pinion gear. There is a small chip on one tooth and some rust forming on the same tooth. I dont have a pic of my actual one so i did some photo editing of a pic. The chip is pretty small and i dont think its a surface that will be touched by the ring gear. The rust rubs off with a finger so thats not a big deal but the chip bugs me. I got it all pretty cheap so i dont want to have to pay to ship it back and everything. I dont know. Will it be dangerous to install it?

As long as the teeth are still there you're ok. I wouldn't sweat it.

I ran a 2.75 to 1 ring and pinion with a chip in that area in my 79 Ranchero for lot's of miles with no problems or noise. I don't know how big the chip is but if 1/4" or less, I would run it.

A chip on a gear could cause a stress crack when that gear has impact on it. I would not run it if your going to put stress like drag racing on the gears.

as long as there's no other cracks it would be fine........i wonder if there's a way to magna flux it like you would heads to make sure it isnt cracked further???? thats the weakest spot on the tooth im sure so i could see how it might just chip off............

Howard ran one for years on his Ranchero, but unless it was stroked, blown and juiced, I would guess that it had less torque than what a typical stang would have. I think you just need to decide if you want to install a chipped pinion or not, and if it goes, just make sure you have the number to the local tow company. I personally would not install it, especially when you consider a new gear set can outlast a 12 year old car, so it is relatively inexpensive to get new. Like timewarp suggested, if you are hell bent on using it, call around to the local machine shops to see how much they would charge for magnafluxing. Good luck dude, I know it sucks to get broken s*!t off ebay.
