Does anyone here have tips on cleaning the MAF sensor?

I need to go get a special screwdriver to get at it... do I need to disconnect
the battery?

Anyway, the 98 GT has started pinging while going up hills. This started when
the weather started getting hot...

I installed a K&N filter last winter. Now I'm wondering, with the higher temps
these last few weeks, (around 100) if that warm air rushing through the K&N
has caused the oil in the filter to mess up the MAF sensor? What else could
this be?

Yes you need a special bit to take the MAF sensor out. #20 secure-torq bit. (the one with the hole in the middle)
I would disconnect the battery.

And the pinging because its hot out?... maybe you just solved your own problem.... ITS HOT OUT. Run higher octane gas, see if that soves it. Unless you recently oiled your K&N I wouldn't see that as the problem. I don't see the warm weather dissolving the oil or anything...

Here is a link to a fairly good MAF cleaning site:

I agree...I don't think the warm weather would cause the filter to all of a sudden start leaking oil out of it onto the MAF. Like Canuck said, I think it's just the hot weather and higher octane gas should take care of it.

OK, but I have started using higher octane gas, and it pings now even in the morning when it's in the 50's or 60's.... it just "started" pinging when the weather got hot, that's some of the reasoning behind my theory.........

Any suggestions as to a cleaning solvent? Alcohol?

Update: I finally was able to take off the MAF
and look at it. Looks very clean to me! So, I
was wrong to blame the K&N. Must just be bad
gas and/or hot temperatures.

No, something is out of whack. Your car should not ping.
1) Could have carbon deposits that need cleaned. Run some seafoam through it.
2) Incorrect spark plugs
3) exhaust system is restricted (usually cats)
These are the 3 things I would look at and one of these is probably your cause.
