Ok I know how to take it off now, but I am getting conflicting reports, some say to lift up the solenoid (where is it?) and otehrs say to just spray it.. do i spray into the hole that goes into the plenum as well? I can see some sooty buildup (i assume its carbon?)

Spray the carbon out of the tunnel the disk moves in, and try to clean the shaft the black disk is attached too - that's the main part that causes the valve to stick. Replacement is the #1 fix, but a good cleaning is worth a try. Obviously, make your best effort to keep the carb cleaner out of the solenoid.

The solenoid is the metal barrel where the electric connector is plugged in.. to avoid getting cleaner in there, hold the IAC upside down when spraying.

got it

another question is... is it normal that the IAC only has one hole? There are two holes, but only through one of them can i see the shaft with the spring, can't see any disc? Also leading into the plenum, one of the holes is blocked off seemingly?

Now I have pics: They look different from the Mach1 IAC... which have two ports, mine only has one? is that right?

Yes that's right. The Gt's IAC uses a hose to connect to the intake tube; the Mach 1 IAC connects strictly to the manifold.

Good luck cleaning it; the common solution to fix it, unfortunately, is replacement.

Right now I am planning on preventative maintance, there aren't any signs of IAC trouble yet other than once when it seemed to surge at idle.

You should use throttle body cleaner, not brake cleaner or carb. cleaner. Just douse it, swish it around, then use a Q-Tip to clean the **** out.
