Clunk sound from rear?

Does anyone else's 'stang clunk when driving slowly (~10 mph) over bad surfaces such as rail road crossings or really torn up pavement? I've noticed a clunking sound coming from what sounds like the rear when doing that. I'm just wondering if that's normal and I've just never noticed it before or if I should bring it in to be checked out.

BTW, I don't have any suspension mods other than a front strut tower brace.

Also, sometimes if I go over a really bad bump it sounds like metal hitting metal. My guess is the rear suspension or the exhaust. However I've tried the shake the exhaust and it doesn't move much at all.

I get that, too. For me it's mostly when going over something uneven. If I go over something straight, like say a speed bump, then it's good. But if I were to hit that speed bump on a diagonal angle I'd hear the clunk in the back.

I do have suspension mods, though. I've been wondering if it's my adjustable upper control arm (Steeda). I might pull it and have a look.

Yeah, I hope it's just something loose that's easy to fix. I'm bringing my car in Monday morning so hopefully they'll fix it fast and I'll post up here what it was.

That's what it sounds like to me, some part of the exhaust hitting another metal part. However when I get under the car and try to shake the exhaust it seems pretty secure and not loose enough to hit anything

Food for thought--I got my gears swapped today and the guy who did the work told me my stock 3.31 gears was installed from the factory BADLY. Instead of 4000 mi they looked like they had 140000 mi complete with excessive metal shavings in the pan. The wear pattern was horrible and one of the nuts was only finger tight. I hadn't noticed any noise on the open road but it would groan some in parking lots. Now with the new gear install I have absolutely no noise at any speed. I might have had the only bad factory install but I doubt it. I am glad I had the swap done before I had problems later.

Thanks for the info '06 Stang. I'm pretty sure it's not a gear issue from the sound of it but I'll find out for sure Monday morning.

That really makes me want to change up to higher gears.

Check your exhaust hangers on the mufflers. Each muffler has two. They are L shaped pieces of metal welded to the mufflers. The L portion mounts through a rubber hole to absorb exhaust vibrations however, the outside portions of the mounts are metal. I had the same noise, the exhaust shifts and they sometimes tend to rub. Check that out. If its that take a pry bar or long heavy duty screw driver and just bend the hangers back alittle bit. I did that to mine, and havent had the problem since.

I'll have to check that in the morning FastHorse. I have the Ford Racing Stingers installed which have pretty long exhaust hangers and I don't believe that's the cause of the noise either but I'll double check to be sure. I know for sure that the car wasn't making the noise when I installed them last fall.

Brought the car into the dealer today and they fixed the noise. It ended up being the rear of the side-skirt was loose.

So it's been almost a year since I last posted in this thread but I apparently still have this clunking problem. I thought it was fixed for a while but it'd definitely still there. It's exactly as I described in the original post, a clunking from the rear over rough surfaces. After doing some searching it seems a lot of S197s have this problem but no one has been able to figure out what's causing it. I found some suggestions that it could be the control arms or bushings in the rear, does anyone know if those could cause that type of sound?

I believe what you may be hearing is the driveshaft clunking sound that most S197's have.

Mine clunks too. I took it back to the dealer and they said they couldn't get the car to do it.

So I have no idea what it is either.

hey, yup i have it too....

i have the driveshaft clunk as well, i feel this bump noise could be the same.... otherwise possibly the poorly installed gears sounds like a good bet.

definitely not the skirt....

its coming from your differential. either the fluid needs to be changed out or you will need another diff.

I'm glad you revived this thread, I'd forgotten about it. I found my clunk: it was the upper control arm bracket. Apparently there is play between the bracket and the bolt that secures the arm, resulting in the clunk I was hearing. This is, I've come to find, not at all uncommon with folks who have put in after-market control arms. I ordered a replacement upper control arm bracket from Metco and put in and I haven't had the clunk since.

PS. I still have plenty of clunk from my factory two-piece drive line, but at least I'm slowly getting rid of the noises.
