This is actually on my VW jetta but figured it would be the same kind of problem. When I'm driving and I just give it a punch on the gas, it acts as if it is in neutral. If I baby the gas, seems to be okay. It's when I need to go up hills, etc, and need power that it acts this way. Fluids are okay, but I think I can smell a little burn when I open the hood. Could this be the clutch cable or the clutch? Is this hard on Front wheel drive? Any help appreciated.

Sounds like a clutch, but make sure it is properly adjusted first (if a self adjusting type, make sure that is working).

Have fun doing the clutch. I did a VW clutch some time back and the funniest part was that the correct trans fluid level was Above the fill plug. The factory manual said to remove the speedo cable IIRC to fill it up.
