I have a 98 GT and i am thinking about upgrading my clutch and getting 4:10's
But what i want to know is does it matter which to get first. I'm on a tight budget so im going to do one first than the other. I heard its better to do the clutch first. is this true? Also the clutch i am looking to get is SPEC brand, stage 1. Is this a good clutch for typical day yo day driving?

Unless you are having problems with your clutch you shouldn't need to replace it yet. If you are just starting out with your mods the factory clutch is fine. I was making well over 300hp before I swapped to an aftermarked unit. Then it was only a King Cobra, burnt that one up at about 400hp and then bought a Zoom Kevelar. That one lasted a couple of years and now I run a Centerforce which is holding up to low 11 sec runs. SPEC I am not familiar with. As far as the gears, go with them first. If it is going to be your daily driver you might want to consider a little less agressive gear. Maybe 3.73s.

X2 As parrish50 said if you are having no problems with your present clutch there is no need to change it

I would agree with what parrish said about not getting a clutch unless you need to. Though, I do have a SPEC stage 3, if I were you I would get the gears 1st. I'm not too familar with the 4.10's personalities on the road but my 3.73s work well for me. I can do 70 mph at just over2000 rpm in my cobra. The gears normally cost less than $200 but then there's installation and you have to calibrate your computer to cooperate with you're new gearing.

Truthfully, if I were you I would consider a few other low dollar alternatives. Tune, Cai, exhaust are a few

The only real cheap power mod for a stock or near stock car is a midpipe (4.6 2v anyway). Everything else can wait and most on these boards will agree. Everyone with a near stock 4.6 2v that has gears would put that on their top mods to do first. It's not the cheapest to do, but its a guaranteed performance gain. I absolutely love my 4.10's. My car is no where near stupid fast, but it will get me in trouble in a hurry. They are perfectly fine for a DD, get 20mpg + on the highway (at 75-80mph), and just make the car so much more fun.

To the OP, if your clutch is ok, it will be ok after the gears. Your clutch will still have the same exact power level to handle. Only difference is it *might* see a little more abuse with your new found enjoyment from gears

Only if the clutch is slipping would I replace it. Should be fine with the new gears ,just make sure it dont hook....then you might have slipping problems

Well the mid-pipe is part of what I was referring to when I said exhaust.

But, a good set of rubber out back helps out alot and underdrive pullies might be a good mod too (I'm not sure about the GTs).
