I have heard alot about the cnl mass air leaning out mustangs. I have one on my car and I have no detonation or white smoke out of the exhaust so I think I am pretty safe. To be on the safe side I heard that if you rotate the mass air clockwise it will richen it up a little. Is the true or do i not have to worry about rotating mine since I have no symptoms of running that lean?

PLEASE ADVISE

symptoms and CEL aside, the only way your gonna be able to tell is with a wideband o2 sensor.

1st, welcome to StangNet!!!
From my understanding, the rotating of the MAF only applies when you have an 'in the fender' air filter, and therefore a 90 degree bend in front of the MAF. And on the 02 on up GTs, there is no sampling tube like on previous models. The sensor is in the middle, so rotating it would not do much.
But the C&L is really not a good product. It simply tricks the computer and causes you to generally run leaner. Running leaner creates more power, but this is really unregulated with the C&L MAF - as I said, it's just tricking the ECC.
If you have no other mods and no computer chip, you're probably OK. But as natx808 said, the only way to really tell is with a wideband A/F ratio meter. Head to a local dyno, spend $50 bucks or so and see what they tell you. If you have your OEM MAF, take it along with you and see if you can swap it out (you'll need a torx bit to swap the electronics over) and test it both ways. We'd love to hear the results!!!
I had the C&L MAF on my 02 GT, but with my SCT leaning me out pretty far already, it was a recipe for detonation. Actually, it would very rarely ping with the C&L MAF, but honestly, swapping back to the OEM MAF seems to make more lower end power, more responsive. Plus it gives me more piece of mind. The OEM MAF is not a restriction...it is good for 400+ HP.
What year stang and what mods do you currently have? And what do you have planned?

cnl mass air

Hey Twogts4us, thanks for your input it really helped. Not too much more planned for my car. You mentioned a superchip tuner, would that help my car in performance of would it make it run to lean with the cnl. I have a automatic would the superchip tuner make my car shift firmer by increasing the line pressure or should I leave the transmission to alone. Could i get a superchip programmer and just firm the shifts only and not program the engine? Her are my mods: 2000 Mustang Gt, cnl mass air, cnl inlet tube, cnl intake plenum, bbk 70mm throttle body, kn filter, slp loudmouth exhaust.
Again thanks for your input.
I see you survived the Hurricane. I live in Virginia and it is going to hit us tomorrow. It is calling for 4-5 inches of rain.

Sorry to butt in, but you mentioned something that I've been trying to get an answer to for a long time. I too have the SCT, and you say it leans out the A/F ratio? I take it that you know this for sure. Does this unit do anything to the timing? I know the stock setting is 10*. I can't even get an answer from Superchips. Thanks.

As a general rule, ANY chip/programmer that is setup for a near-stock car will advance timing to 14 degrees and slightly lean you out. With the addition of higher octane, you thus make more power.

My SCT Flash Programmer, ads a tad bit of leaning according to my SCT dealer.

The MAF is a sensor, not a performance part. Replace it when you peg the stock one, not before.

+1 For the most part, if you're NA, you don't need a new MAF.

You've got the older, generic tuning, Superchips tuner. I really don't know much about these.
Superchips Custom Tuning (www.superchipscustom.com) is an entirely separate company from Superchips. They do custom tuning. Diablo is getting into this market now too, with their ChipMaster Revolution tuning.

Had mine since 1998 with no problems. Any air modification is going to change A/F ratio...
