I got the car running this past weekend. I drove it for 80-90 miles trouble free. Then when pulling into a parking lot I scraped a little on the exhaust. Then my cel came on. I thought that maybe I cut an 02 wire or something but I can't see anything hanging down (will jack up tonight to visually inspect). But the kicker is It pulled lean codes for both banks. That would either be a maf or o2 problem right?

Codes I think were: P0171 System Too Lean (Bank 1) and P0174 System Too Lean (Bank 2).

That. Now I have not checked my fp yet either but doubt thats the issue as most of the time when a regulator goes bad it dumps TOO MUCH fuel on the engine and my experience with fuel pumps going bad is that they either work or don't.

Anyone know where I should start looking?

Thanks for the info Hotcobra, it unfortunetly didn't help as we found out Autozone's plug wiring diagram was completely wrong.
Anyway, I'm going to jack it it tonight. It has a small exhaust leak so I'm going to re align it and then spray come carb cleaner on all of my vac lines and pcv connections.

engine specs

the engine specs i sent you have the firing order in the very first paragraph..but thats ok ,they look so close to being the same yea,,,i can send you some good reading on how to read and understand codes and how to diagnose codes,,,i use a predator ,it will read most electrical values and you can see whats working or not and see changes that sensors make

codes

squeak fwiw,i grew up and watch the change from points and condensors to electronic ignition to fuel injection,obd1 and obd2....things have changed,,for me have found its harder to understand it than to fix it,,,todays cars with the use of hand held devices you can almost fix the car from the drivers seat,,,not sure if you scanner came with full instructions,my predator did not,im home schooling myself,, with my last problem the predator saved me thousands,,

So I sprayed carb cleaner on all vac lines and junctions. I sprayed all the way around the t/b, egr and upper/lower intake gasket. can't get the car to surge. So i assume my exhaust leak is causing it. I can't get the damn h pipe to re seal again. It was perfect before and didn't leak but now i can't get a seal to save my life. I think I blew out the damn pass side h pipe to header gasket. Going to try to tighten it again and see.

Any other ideas?

EDIT: I have been searching fwiw. I can only find info to clean my maf and have no exhaust leaks. I will try to readjust the exhaust again tonight and clean the maf. I will report back tomorrow.

vacuum leaks

squeak ..leaks are very hard to find....i have long tubes and i have a big crack with in inchs of the o2 and no code,,but i did have this code,,when i had my engine out ,i checked my vacuum harness by blowing into lines and sucking on lines..i found 1 that leaked and 2 had restrictions...mine were those tiny mini lines that crack very easy..... now with engine back in i dont have that code anymore..2 things i did was i used silicone on the dipstick at block, and i taped my pcv hose completly...not sure if that was it but no code

Thanks again. I'll try that with the vac lines tonight. The pcv hoses don't fit the tighest either so Maybe I'll try to tape or clamp them down a bit to ensure no loss there.

I dicked with this dang thing last night for 2-3 hours. I have concluded that I'm going to burn it down to the ground.

I can't get the passenger side h-pipe to header to seal. It has a new gasket in there but seems to not want to seal. That is def where my leak is as my car is white and u can see black soot all around it from where its been leaking. (fresh at that). Plus when I stick my head in the engine bay above that side I can smell exhaust when I blip the throttle.

Should I try a new gasket again? It seems this pos is seperated from the metal and barely holding on. Damn ford quality parts.

I know your frustration well. I get those 2 codes once every month or 2, mostly after a highway drive. I have tried everything even resealing the PI intake a couple of times. to no avail... hard to track down the problem when its so intermintent.

My 'fix' is I got a cheapo code reader and just erase when it comes on. most likely im damaging the engine over a long course. My thought is that the comp. is maxing out on A/F adjustments. After so many hits the light comes on. Using the 98 comp to run that PI motor?

I have no idea how the stock comp handles this matter. Psuedo-logic at best.

good luck though.

Ok, so I STILL have this dang code. Here is what I've done to get rid of it.

New o2 sensors. New rear mil elims, all working correctly.
The exhaust leak is fixed and not leak what so ever.
The C&L maf is gone for a stock one with a stock air box
There are no leaks/vac leaks that i can find anywhere.

I am still getting my codes. The cel took about 10 miles to pop on before I swapped maf's. Then it took about 65 or so miles to come on this time. I was actually thinking I fixed it for a while but it came on as I got off the highway on Sat. So Obviously I am getting frustrated.

And yes, I am using the stock 98 puter to run the pi motor. I should be able to do it just fine. I know a dyno custom tune will make it run better but thats not in the budget right now (got a kid coming )

I have not checked the fuel system. I replaced the fuel filter this last time out. Forgot about that. I need to get a pressure guage on my schrader valve and see whats up.

So I found a cam cover bolt that was not tight and leaking oil out (obviously air can get in as well). I tightened it down, checked all my vac lines, pcv lines and such.... No leaks anywhere else and all lines are in good shape. I replaced the old connecting hoses just to be safe a while ago, no leaks. I drove the car last night and no light. I drive it this am to work and no light up until I turn on the front Defroster.... comes on within 1 sec of the defrost....

Would there be a vac leak in there for the door that flips the air between the vents?
