I have an '02 GT that I rescued from more than a year bouncing between dealerships and auctions. Over the winter, I'll be doing some updates on the motor, including replacing some factory ignition parts.

I was going to go with the Accel kit on AM, but heard some good things about SR Performance gear. Anyone here have any thoughts or experience with either and/or both?

The general consensus is that Motorcraft Coil on Plugs are the best. Most People don't replace them till they break. Are yours giving you trouble?

Fact is most cop's are made by the same company. Granetelli's, Accel, ect....... Stock cop's, are waaaaay to costly.

Sometimes you've just got to suck it up and spend the money on the OE quality. I replaced the COP's on my F150 with an aftermarket "performance" brand a couple of years ago. Thus far, 6 out of the 8 I changed have failed and I've actually put my old COP's back in in their place.

Sure, they've got lifetime warranty, but it's a PITA to have to continue swapping them out. I'm gonna see if they'll exchange their 6 bad POS units for 3 Genuine Motorcraft units and call it a day.

There was an article recently in Modified Mustangs & Fords where they did a swap of the OEM coils for the Granatelli Motorsports units on an 08' GT/CS. This 4.6 is a little more advanced with the variable cam timing and the extra valve, but the swap proved incredible results over OEM. Granted for the money, I would say this it is hardly worth the gain at $11 per hp. You would also not see this much of a gain on the 4.6 SOHC 2V engine. http://www.mustangandfords.com/how-to/engine/mdmp-0906-mustang-ignition-coil-replacement-upgrade/

I couldn't find anything on the Accel units or the SR Performance units. stangr5oh just swapped in the Accel units on his 99-04 GT. Perhaps you could message him and see what he thinks! http://www.stangnet.com/mustang-forums/threads/my-progress-thread.879485/

When reading articles in these stang mags, there is always info left out not unlike those television shows that slap on super chargers with-out telling about fuel upgrades and extensive tuning. The spark is important, but it remains the same on most mustangs. More importantly is compression, timing, spark plug gapping, ext.... I could do an article on how a cat back exhaust could net 20 hp's without telling you about the tune, longtubes, cams and intakes.

Most of these articles are written to sell magazines and to push parts, not to depict real world results.

You don't find it at all suspect that they were able to establish unheard of results with THEIR products on THEIR dyno?

I'd take those results with a grain of salt. For argument sake, I have NEVER seen an ignition product change horsepower results a significant amount on any vehicle...ever. Never mind on a nearly stock vehicle.

I looked into aftermarket COPs when I had a failing COP. I was not able to find a single real world example of the aftermarket stuff producing better results than stock. If you do, please post a link. I just replaced the bad COP with a motorcraft unit and haven't had an issue since.

Look on eBay for Visteon branded COP's. They are the OE manufacturer of them..

If the electronic portion of the OE COPs are good, as in the plastic casing is not cracked or obvious other damage, juse replace the springs and boots and roll. Costs $30 on Amazon or Rockauto for the kit. The boots get dry rotted and cracked and the springs corrode but there have been a lot of tests done and rarely is it the COP internals itself that goes out. I'm about to do this rebuild to my 5.4L Expy this weekend.

And the OE COPs really are better than the aftermarket. Numerous tests done in this arena too, OE always wins. And whoever suggests anything Granatelli... read up on him and some of the crap he's pulled. I would not put a Granatelli part on my car if THEY paid ME.
