coil over question

im getting ready to install a complete suspension in my car and have a question about the coil over install. I have the tokico blue struts and the upr coil over kit. My question is about the strut itself. the instructions say to remove the dust cover collar that is installed on the stock strut. The tokico struts have the same thing, but if i remove that cover will it mess up the operation of the strut? I just need to know if that collar keeps the top of the strut together or not? thanks in advance.

No it doesn't keep the strut together. Just be careful removing them or you can scratch the shaft and cause a leak. Start by drilling the rivet piece a little after you tape up the shaft. Then start cutting and prying it it off with a sharp chisel from underneath.

I figured a picture is worth a thousand words, so this is what im dealing with.
The rivets that your talking about are not on this strut. The collar just looks like it is a pressed fit. just want to make sure that removing the collar wont hurt the structure and operation of the strut. Thanks guys for the help.

I have the UPR coil overs also with Lakewoods 50/50 and I called UPR to make sure I wouldn't screw up the strut by removing the cover. I suggest you do the same and even call Tokico to make sure they won't get messed up.
