Exactly what I was thinking, they use a cam sensor where the distributer used to go. While your there, pull the engine harness and computer, because I don't know how the mustang computer is going to feel about it.

I didn't see that. I don't know anything about the megasquirt but it does have provisions for running coil packs? You'll probally still need the engine harness. What's the purpose of going with coil packs over the distributer system? Better spark timing controll and a stronger spark?

I said the same thing to the guy how is going to help me. He said its better because the timing well not jump around. Also all the wiring is custom. the timing is now controled by the squrit. When I get it done I'll so all of you guys it. It frecking COOL!!

We will be glad to see it. I've often wondered why it hasn't been done more often. I have heard of it before, but it's been a while. I've often wanted to see it done such as how the LS1 is done where the individual coil packs sit on the valve covers with a very short wire.

The timing shouldn't jump around with a distributer. If it does then there is usually too much play in the bushings/berrings or the driven gear or even cam. I am probally going to go with a MSD Billit unit in mine.

This is a bit of a first for me too. The coil pack guys revert back to distributors, but not the other way around too often.

Do Explorers use crank sensors too (the direct ignitions I have worked on had both a cam and crank sensor - each performing different functions. Crank sensor was more for baselining and the cam sensor window was for accomodating timing advance, etc). Might be another part you need..............

Good luck.

Yes, there is a sensor where the distributer shaft used to go. Just like the LT1 has a sensor way back there, good luck getting to it though. They need something to fill the hole and drive the oil pump. So even if you don't use the sensor, your going to need something there or your going to have no oil pressure.

Jason, the crank sensor/reluctor ring is normally right on the crank - that was what I was wondering about.
