I want to add a CAI to my non-modded 99GT.
Mostly for it's cool looks. I have heard that it may
cause rough idle/running. Is this true? or
are some better than others?

Thanks for the response.

i have the K & N FIPK...I wish I had gotten just the filter BUT I am happy for having a relatively unencumbered big tube from the filter to the throttle body.

Get a good free flowing filter (K&N - Amsoil etc.) and hold on to the rest for some meaningful mods.

Worthless.

Put a filter in there and be done with it.

I understand the CAI is problably worthless,
but if I put it in for looks. is it going to HURT the way
the car runs/idles.

Thanks.

Dont waste your money on it. Just save for a blower or nitrous.

I agree, it's not totally worthless. After lots of modding it has it's purpose, just don't expect much for hp gains. I've never heard of rough idleing from a K&N.

You'll have to drive around with it on for a while before the fuel map can readjust itself. Until then it may idle rough or just sound a little different.

You'll be fine. Like someone said earlier, don't expect much HP from it, but you're doing it mostly for looks anyway so you'll be happy. I haven't had any idle problems at all. I chose densecharger due to it not being metal and people seem to be happy with the system and the company's service. Good luck with your decision.

The only cars that seem to see good gains is blower cars.

People have had problems with the CAIs with 90* bends in front of the MAF. Some have no issues, others have idle problems, etc. I would stick to Steeda or K&N for that reason.

Also just a note some cars tend to run lean with an aftermarket cold air kit. I would have your air fuel checked.

CAI's won't add much power on their own, but used in conjunction with other intake/expulsion mods (a larger MAF, throttle body, plenum (70mm/75mm), headers and straight thru aftermarket mid-pipes/mufflers/catback) will yield nice results overall and sound truly like a race car.

There are a lot of restrictions in the stock air flow systems (air box, TB, plenum, exhaust manifold, mid-pipes, stock mufflers, etc.) so just putting on a CAI has little positive effect on its own. You have to address all the restrictive areas with larger components and then, working in concert with each other, the larger components mentioned above all jointly yield more power. If you are looking for power gains it makes no sense to have a CAI if keeping the stock exhaust manifold/mid-pipes/mufflers/tail pipes, still restricts flow. But open it all up at the same time and that's when you will see gains. Make sense?

I've got a similar question, more so just to add to his question. If you get a bigger TB say like 70mm or 75mm after you get the K&N FIPK-II will it still fit?

If you're really worried about airflow restrictions, you know where to look. The real restriction is in the heads (and cams). Your car is not choking to death because of a rubber tube on the airbox or a 65mm throttle body.
