Collector car letter?

I'm going to register my 93 5.0 as a "collector" car, but NJ division of motor vehicles is asking for

"Evidence from either the MFG or a recognized car club (on letterhead) stating the vehicle was issued in a limited quantity or a limited quantity remains."

Anyone have a letter like this? What can I do?

I was told recently that NJ was doing away with the Collector Car registration, but perhaps that may not be true??

I haven't heard of a letter like this or if your 93 is one of a limited number of remaining cars like it, but perhaps evidence of the following these cars have, the size of the aftermarket and backing from perhaps Carlisle Productions or a similar organization that can attest to the numbers in which cars of your vintage attend the large shows that they put on would be enough proof to support your claim of "collector car" status

Find out if they have a book on what cars are collectiable, cause in the state of ohio they do.
It is the cada book of collectiable cars. and my 88 notch was in the book so i got collector plates in ohio. Good luck hope you get them.

actually collecter plates? my dad wants to do this to his.. ( if it can be done ) but wants to keep his vanity plate?

I have vanity collector plates. You can get them.

NJ sucks on every level. We're lucky they allow us to own cars at all.

They don't even let you pump your own gas!! That's a concept I could never deal with if i moved to NJ. I've always gone to self-serve!

as if gas isn't expensive enough, then you have to tip the person pumping it

Depends on the state.

In MA, there are no antique vanity plates.

Wow, I hate that idea as I dont like anyone touching my Vehicles! My Mustang needs to be filled slow and I have to let go of the handle before it clicks or gas will flood out down the side of the car, I can image how fun that would be trying to explain to the person on each fill up!

Gas is cheaper in jersy than where i am and you dont have to tip the people..

i have a few antique cars with historic plates, but i've never heard of this "collector car" status/plates. how are they different from regular/historic plates? and do you get a insurance discount?

You do NOT get collector plates. The only thing a collector registration does is allow you to bypass most of inspection. You must be under 3k miles a year driven, and now that they closed the loophole, as stated you need a letter. Even after you get the letter, they still have to decide if they want to give you the collector reg.
You do get a cool inspection sticker tho. It's a triangle. A collector inspection consists of stopping at the station, taking an odometer reading, driving at least a mile, and getting another odometer reading. As long as it goes up, you pass.

Collector vehicles

To be classified as a "collector vehicle" you need to apply when you register and make sure that the vehicle is:
A limited production vehicle or a vehicle made in limited quantities
Less than 25 years old
Not registered as a "historic vehicle" or a "street rod"
Not driven more than 3,000 miles per year
Insured as a limited use "collector vehicle"
To be classified as a collector vehicle, your vehicle cannot be registered as a "historic vehicle" or a "street rod." Download our fact sheet [23k pdf] for more information.

Vehicles applying for collector vehicle status must be approved by MVC. Follow these steps to apply:
Complete the collector vehicle application [41k pdf]
Submit a letter from the vehicle manufacturer, recognized car club or a collector organization attesting to the vehicle’s limited production status. Must be printed on official letterhead
Show proof of limited-use insurance
Include photographs of front, driver side, passenger side and rear of the vehicle
Mail all materials and photos to:

Motor Vehicle Commission
Collector Vehicle Status
I/M Support Unit
P.O. Box 680
Trenton, NJ 08666-0680

Applications can only be processed through the mail and will take approximately two weeks. Once you receive an approval letter from the MVC, take the original letter with raised seal, the original application, and $25 (check, money order, credit card or cash) to any MVC Agency to purchase a collector vehicle status voucher which will be issued immediately.

^ i had this on my 1990 Coupe - lucky for me the person who had it before me already got the collecter registration so all i had to do was renew it.. unfortunatly i think i'll be driving my new car more then 3k a year so i need regular registration..

But my 4>8 swap has a full blue interior with power seats and all options, that has to be a collector car no?
