I know there are hundreds of these, so I apologize, but I'm kind off stuck. I just swapped out my old gears and put in a set of new Motive 3.73's in my 2005 Mustang GT. While I was in there I replaced the pinion bearings, pinion seal, the carrier bearings, the wheel bearings, and the wheel seals.
The drive side looked good to me, but the coast side looks like it is really favoring the toe. I figured the drive side was the most important and I wasn’t sure how to fix the coast side without messing up the drive side, so I buttoned it up and took it for a drive. I only took it up to about 40mph because when I let off of the gas above 30mph it would make a whining noise. It didn't seem to make any noise while I was accelerating or driving at a constant speed. Below are a few facts about my set-up:
- I did a pinion bearing preload of about 20in-lbs.
- My pinion depth was only about .0006 off of the value stamped on the pinion head.
- The backlash was at about .010-.011.
- I set the backlash and then I preloaded the carrier bearings by putting .003 shims on each side.
I'm going out of town for work this week, so I figured it would be a good opportunity to gather a little information before I break my rear end open again this Friday. I plan to check the pattern again and see if anything has changed, because I've heard some things can move and settle after your first drive. I’ve taken it this far, so I would rather not have to pay someone to finish it off for me.
