My '70 Convertible has 2 top issues.

First, the top goes down with no problem but needs lots of help going up. The motor sounds like it's working but is there a way to check it, i.e. pressure output? I am planning on new cylinders and tubing. Would that be your recommendation?

Second, the hinged rear window is split at the hinge. Is there a way to replace this easily of is it as hard as top replacement. It seems like it would be easy with the zipper but I am sure it's not.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

I would first check and make sure the fluid level is correct in the top pump. A low fluid level may be your porblem since there is no problem going down. Also if the cylinder are not leaking I would not change the out, paint if needed but not change.

The power top on my 73 became manual when one of the hoses cracked and I couldn't find a cheap replacement.

My top cylinders also leaked and forced me to add fluid at least twice a summer till the line broke.

As far as that rear window. You can replace just that piece of your top. It's generally the most expensive part. You may have a hard time finding a perfect match to zip to your old window insert.

If you do decide to change it you will have to unbolt the rear tackstrip from the back of the car. remove your old bottom section of the window insert from the tack strip. Staple and glue (3m super weatherstrip adhesive works great) the bottom of the new window inset to the rear tack strip and then rebolt the strip to the car.

I booked marked a cool page with top install instructions. I'll find it for you.

Convertible top installation, domestic cars

I just recently replaced my top myself and it was tedious, but not really that difficult. There was just a lot of taking it off, stretching\adjusting to remove wrinkles. It's not perfect, but it's close enough for government work.

I've got lots more pictures and video from the installation. I need to get it together and on my website.

Yep, fluid level, as well as making sure you have full power and good grounds.

I still have the original window from my 69 'Vert if you get into trouble. The center seal/joint is shot, and I covered it with thin strips of black Gaffer's tape.

If it's like the earlier models there should be a plug on the end of the pump. Shop manual says fluid should be level with bottom of the hole. It helps to have one of those flexible screw on hoses for topping it off with fluid.

fluid type

is the correct fluid type Mercon Type F?

also, when replacing the rear window only, what is the best way to make sure that it is tight enough? I know mine has a lot of pressure on the zipper. Could too much pressure also contribute to premature cracing of the hinge in the glass?

Hum, good questions.

With the tension on the rear window insert unfortunately you'd have to simple test fit and adjust by moving the point where you staple the material to the tack strip.

I've got a 73 and a solid rear window so I really don't know about the tension causing premature failure of the hinge in your glass insert.
