Got a question... I think I want to convert my 04 GT hood... I do not want to have the hood from a Mach1 and make it look like a Mach1, but... the non-functional "scoop" is killing me... Coming from many cars (gm, sorry) that have FUNCTIONAL ram air... I feel that a scoop should do something... Here's what I think. I've got a TON of auto body experience and have built a few of these 4.6's, few LS1's, and other engines for "projects"... so my knowledge is pretty out there on some of this stuff ... some may even go as far as to say I know what I am talking about on certain subjects!!

I want to make the factory GT hood scoop functional... so what I want to do is take the ram air (shaker) setup off of a totaled out Mach car (03-04) and make it somehow work with my hood, cut open and ducted into this setup, opening the front of my hood scoop up to actually allow air into the engine compartment... I can do a very clean job on the underside of the hood, and make it look real nice...

Just kind of curious, being new (totally new) to the Mustang scene, if anyone has

A) Tried this
B) Succeeded
C) Has Pictures!!!

Thanks, any help, feedback (good or bad), or pictures will be helpful!!

No. No one here has done it successfully. I think one guy tried it, and it actually hurt his performance.

BUT

I'm sure it could be done by someone with good fabrication skills that knows what they are doing, and probably even look good. But I doubt the performance gain would be worth the many hours of work and fabrication.

And you will probably get flamed for not doing a forum search on this topic, because it has been covered many times, usually ending with everyone slamming the guy for wanting to try it.

Also, welcome to stangnet!

Edit: If you do it successfully, make a progress thread because I think it would be an interesting read. I'd like to see it.

I've seen kits out there for doing this with our Mustangs. Cost usually $800+.

Not a big fan of the Hood Applique' (Applies to GT hood)

Don't recall the other company, but they have a kit that uses the Mach I hood. Just need to check out the junkyards and get lucky.

The stock GT hood isn't high enough in two ways. #1 is that the scoop is actually very low in the stream of air over the car. You would actually get poor flow into the scoop. Mach 1 owners typically have to raise their hood scops up even higher to get a good ramming effect. Take a look at a mach 1 next to a GT and you'll see the difference in height of the scoops.

#2 reason is there is not much room under the hood to fabricate the plumbing needed to direct air to the airbox like a mach 1. Then you need to devise a system to drain water away.

Opening the scoop up for the hell of it is an even worse idea. It will just blow dirt and water down onto your engine
