Man this is making me irritated. Ive had so many things go wrong on me all at once and now the last thing im dealing with is the cooling fans. Ive been searching around on here trying to find some threads that might help, but havent really had any luck. My cooling fans will not come on. Well, its itermittent. They come on sometimes but not others. Does anybody have a pinpoint test for this. Im having trouble finding one on motoralldata. Thanks.

Yea ive checked the wires they seem to all be good. The ones i know of at least. And i think i may be having another problem. I replaced the thermostat and the ect today thinking maybe it may have been the ect. I just bought one instead of checking it bcause theyre cheap. But after letting it run and warm up and so on it started to overheat again and the fans didnt come on. But when i shut the car off the upper and lower radiator hoses were stone cold. I know i didnt put the t-stat in wrong. I put it in with the sping towards the intake manifold. Soo im stuck. i dont know if its clogged or what. If i didnt owe so much on this car i would just sell it and get something else.

So, you presume the car is overheating because the gauge in the instrument cluster is reading really high, is that correct? That gauge is fed by the CTS (coolant temp sender), not the ECT. The gauges are known for being wrong - my red-headed mistress (red GT) reads really high as well. If you have a code reader that can read PIDs, you can see the output of several sensors, including the ECT. It is possible that the engine is not even at operating temperature yet, and the instrument cluster gauge is wrong.

The higher-priced Autoxray code readers can read PIDs, it's well worth the price. The one I have (Autoxray 5000) has cables to read codes from Ford, Chrysler, GM and some import OBDI and OBDII cars. Well worth the investment.

The CTS is a small brass sensor screwed into the intake just off to the right, on the opposite side of the distributor from the ECT. It has one single wire leading to it with a 90* rubber plug on the end.

No i have an autometer water temp guage. the engine gets really hot(well over two twenty) and it keeps climbing fast. Oh and how much does that code reader run.
