Cost to rebuild a T5?

Wow, it's been a while since I have posted here at stangnet...sometimes I forget that I still have a Mustang. Anyways, the reverse gear in my 140k mile t-5 has been destroyed since Thanksgiving and I need to get a fully functional tranny in my car relatively soon. I bought a used t-5 that was supposed to be in useable shape, however when I put that trans in 3rd, it is obviously crunchy, however the transmission came out of a newer mustang and has fewer miles. So, I guess I will probably get that trans rebuilt. My question is as follows:

- What kind of cost am I looking at to get a basic rebuild done on a t-5 with a trashed 3rd gear?

I'm guessing $3-400 in parts depending on were you get them and exactly which ones you need. It may be less. Who is going to do the labor?

Well, I was considering getting the t-5 rebuild video and trying it myself, but Im not sure that I feel like dealing with the aggravation. I really just want to get a transmission that works 100% and not have to worry about it anymore.

The going rate for rebuilds, with parts seems around $1100.

The parts are readily obtainable, and the trans is not real hard to work on. I did a 3-4 syncho change on one a couple years ago, for about $175 in parts and a couple days. The manuals are easy to find. I used a 46 to 86 Jeep CJ manual from Haynes, because I had it. They are also online several places.

$1100!!?? I can get a new heavy duty T5 from summit or jegs for that much. The trans is out of the car so I figured I would be looking at a few hundred plus the cost of parts. I better call around and see what the deal is.

Can you rebuild it with stonger gears? like a moding it a little.

$1100 is coming close to what it would take to get a GForce in there.
$950 -heavy duty gear set
$165 -small parts kit (bearings synchros)
$1-200 -26 spline clutch disc

You can get a new gear set for $3-500 from Hanlon or D&D.
A rebuild kit, like the GForce small parts kit, is about $150-200.

I'd say order the video and see if you want to tackle this project.

As for upgrading the T-5, that is the kit GForce offers.

I don't know how you feel about the DYI thing when it comes to gears, some people don't like the idea of working on transmissions. If the DYI transmission fix idea isn't something that you would rather leave to someone else, here are some resources:

A T5 rebuild kit with syncros, bearings and other small parts costs about $160. It does not include any gears or shafts.

Hanlon also has a video on how to rebuild your T5 or Tremec. If they are out of stock see http://cartapes.com. It costs less than $20, and is worth every penny of it.

I did a Tremec 3550 rebuild, and it wasn't that difficult. The video was an immense help, and I would recommend viewing it. At $20, it will give you an opportunity to look and decide for yourself if you think that it is something you want to try to do.

The tricky part is that you will need some shims to adjust the endplay in the two shafts: the new bearings will change the clearance. There is no way of telling what it will be until you get to the point that it is time to measure and check the clearances. Halon has the individual shims if you can wait for them. If you can't afford the wait, the auto parts store can sell you some shim stock and you can make your own, or have a machine shop make them for you. The shim stock comes in brass (easy to cut) and steel, in varying thicknesses.

I bought a 2.95 upgraded gearset (same as T5Z) and a rebuild kit from a guy on the corral and got my trans rebuilt for a grand total of $707.... $607 for the gearset and rebuild kit and $100 for the rebuild. It can be done for cheap!

I'm not too scared of working on a transmission, its just that I haven't wrenched on my car over the entire winter (you guys with garages are sooo lucky) and the laziness factor is really kicking in. I'll call some shops and see what they quote me, but I think I'll also order the rebuild video and see what I'm up against. Thanks for all the info; I'll keep everyone posted.

I'd go around to some tranny shops and see what a rebuilt one would cost...I'd guess $600-$800 and one of the old tranny's...

t-5 rebuild

Hanlon has a very good website and so does medatronics a lot of info and both also sell parts and t-5 specific manuals. My rebuild (all the teeth torn off of 3rd gear countershaft) cost me $150 for the rebuild kit which came with all the small parts including all the adjusting shims necessary, $40 for a new steel throwout bearing support (original aluminum one was worn) and $245 for a new gearset( new countershaft and 2nd and 3rd gears) I probably should have bought all new gears because I now have a whine from the mismatched wear between the old and new gears which will eventually go away. My trans was in very bad shape and probably should have had everything replaced (oh well live and learn). good luck Frank
