Could a worn out traction lock cause a axle to break ?

If the traction lock is worn out wouldn't that put more stress on one axle ?

Depends on the situation. If you've got great traction and the load has been shifted to one side, I could see it putting additional stress on the one axle. But if this is just on the street and you're just experiencing the patented "one wheel peel" then it's likely the axle finally just let go after years of abuse.

Ahhh, now that's a different story. 99-01 IRS axles are like tooth picks. Did you get a little wheel hop before the "pop" by any chance?
