hey guys my mother has this car which is a 98 GT with a 4.6. Anyhow i drove it the other day and it smell like burning antifreeze and i noticed it was smoking out from under the hood. So i checked it out and i thought it was one of those water sensors that screws into the top of the intake that is until i leaned over the motor to rev it up and it sprayed extremely hot water all over me. I'm not sure if its a temp switch or coolant sensor where the crack is but its on the passenger side on the upper front part of the engine. the crack is actually right below the sensor and only leaks or sprays when the rpms are up. the part of the intake where its craked is plastic, Is that repairable? without replacing the whole intake? Is there a different intake we can get if it needs replaced that is better that that one? like gas milage or more HP? maybe an Aluminum one? Please help.

Thanks
Jimmie

no it is not repairable , some of those cars had recalls on the intakes so you might wanna check with the dealer on that to see if its covered , if not , post this on modulardepot.com under Ford Parts forums and ask Randy for a price on a replacement intake , there PI intakes are on backorder till the end of june , if you are just looking for a replacement give randy a shout and order from him, great prices , if you cant put it on yourself just buy the parts from randy and get some quotes from garages to put it on , pretty easy actually , just a little time consuming if you have never done it before . Aftermarket company motormite has actually developed a non PI 96-98 model replacement but it wont be out to late july and it should be very reasonably priced but for now Randy at modulardepot.com has the best prices .

If she is looking for more performance check into this if you have the $$

Go to your Ford dealer first. This happened to my 96 T-bird 4.6 about 2 years ago, and they replaced it at no charge. The replacement has an aluminum casting where the water passage is.

I own a '98. No extended coverage for the '98s - only the 96-97s have the 7 year 70k mile warranty on the intake. With the number of threads on '98s now, there should be........

I hate to say it, but search on "cracked intake" or "PI intake" and you will find a wealth of information on this subject including install instructions parts needed etc... I went the way of using a newer version of the PI intake with the built-in aluminum crossover that should never crack (with assorted other minor parts to make it work) and am happy with the results. if you want to see what the newer PI Intake looks like, click on the link in my sig - it's on page 2. gefracing.com has PI intakes at a decent price for example.

I agree.

NO recall on 98, only 96-97 and it's only good for 7 years 70,000 mi. so unless the car was built late in the model year, and not driven much, your hosed even if you own a 97.
Look around, you will find NON-pi intakes with al. crossovers in various mustang forum classifieds, and it's an easy swap. don't take it to the dealer, they will charge you about 650 for the swap
