I just got a great deal on a perfect 1998 GT.....drove it for one day before the intake cracked (it might have been cracked before?). This is my first Mustang, so I don't know much about my options here. It's driveable, but loses a little coolant when it gets hot. What will a stock replacement cost, or is there an alternative? How hard is it to swap? Any help i can get would be much appreciated.

well first you better tell the guy you got it from to pay for a NEW intake. second, if you want to do the easy way you can get a PI lower intake and spacers to make it fit with out swappin the heads. the jobs not that hard.

Here is a little information on the cracked intake issue...

Defective Ford Manifolds
Court: U.S. District Court, Northern District of California
Ticker Symbol: NYSE: F

LRO represents eligible plaintiffs in a lawsuit alleging that several recent models of cars manufactured by Ford Motor Company may contain inherently defective engine intake manifolds. These manifolds are manufactured out of plastic and have an abnormal tendency to crack, leading to overheating and in many cases complete engine failure and/or damage to other parts of the engine. While Ford has offered to replace these defective intake manifolds free of charge for cars purchased by police forces and taxi cab companies, they have yet to offer such a "recall" to individual consumers who purchased the same cars. Consequently, consumers must pay for their own repairs if the defective manifolds fail.

The following Ford automobiles equipped with Ford's 4.6 Liter SOHC engine may contain defective engine manifolds: Mercury Grand Marquis (1996-2001); Ford Mustang (1996-2001); Ford Explorer (1996-2002); Ford Crown Victoria (1996-2001); Lincoln Town Car (1996-2001); Mercury Cougar (1996-1997); Ford Thunderbird (1996-1997), and all Mercury Grand Marquis (1996-2001).

U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken denied Ford's motion to dismiss and held that plaintiffs' claims under the California Legal Remedies Act can go forward. (Judge Wilken's Order)

By the way the manifold on my 99' GT has also cracked. I am working on the repair for it but it seems that the extended warranty that I purchased is worthless because the warranty company went bankrupt... Sucks to be me huh....

I am working on joining the class action law suit due to the complete lack of help offered from Ford.... As you can tell I am not to happy about all of this....

Replacing the intake is the only way to fix the problem and preferably one with the aluminum crossover that won't ever crack again. Some people have tried epoxy, but it is only temporary lasting only a few hours or days.

What else do you need to make that PI intake work on a 98 SOHC? Spacers to mate to the heads?? Anything else?

Thanks Billy.

If you are interested, I have the intake off my 01 GT (not sure if it will work or not), I put a Kenne Bell supercharger on and it comes w/ its own intake. It has less that 40K on it. I have a lot of stock stuff that was not put back on w/ the KB install. Let me know, I am sure we can do a lot better that $180.
