I'm doing underdrive pulleys on my 04' 4.6 GT and the crank pulley isn't coming off, even with an impact. Does anyone know if it is reverse threaded? Thanks

I ran into a similar problem when I was does my brother pullies on his 01 GT. First off, put the car is 5th gear. Then I kept the belt on to give it extra tension. I then lubbed it up with some wd40 and let it soak for a few minutes. Without a impact wrench I was able to get if off and I only way 165lbs so it is not impossible to get off.

Here is the thread I started: http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=656702&highlight=crank+pulley+problems

Get some PBblaster and spray it down. A cheater bar on the wrench helps. I had to wedge a large screwdriver against the block and pulley to keep it from turning.

We finished it. It was kind of wierd actually. There was a washer on it and it kept turning too. I don't know exactly cause my friend was under the car when we were taking it off, but once we held the washer, it came off rather easily with some PBblaster. Everything else went smoothly. Thanks for your help guys.

A few questions, I am about to do the install on a 98 GT:

1. What brand of underdrive pulleys did you install?
2. You used a harmonic balance puller tool, right?
3. Any advice?

The puller is a must...

Replace the crank bolt with a new one if you kit doesn't have one. Also get pullies that replace the crank pulley...not piggyback type.

Can you expand on this large screwdriver being wedged? Pics? Drawing? I have an auto so I need to do something to hold that crank pulley still.

I bought the Steeda Underdrive Pulleys, so it came with a new bolt, but it says NOT to use it, that it's for alignment only. Also, it's not the piggyback type. I also have a harmonic puller, so that's no problem.

I would also like to know how you used the screwdriver as a wedge. I tried for an hour to get the alternator pulley off, as well as the crank pulley. I ended up using PB blaster on both, and that didn't help ONE bit. It only made things worse...I have a really squeaky belt now

ANY help/advice would be appreciated...thanks

The Steeda kit comes with 2 bolts. One is the bolt you use to draw the crank pulley back on, then you remove that, and install the other bolt they supply, which is the correct sized bolt, but isn't quite long enough to draw the pulley on. That's why there are 2 bolts.

He proably used the screwdriver as a wedge by pushing the shaft of the screwdriver through the opening in the pulley, and pushing down on the handle so it wedges the end of the screwdriver between the oil pan or whatever it is and the pulley. Not a good idea if you don't like scratching things up, and not necessary if you just put the car in 5th and take the ebrake off. Of course, if you have an automatic, you can supposedly just remove some servicing cap, and wedge something in the torque converter to hold it still.

For the alternator, the easiest way for non-air tool equipped people is to just remove the whole assembly and bring it down to autozone. I can tell you though, that you can still use the OEM pulley (smaller diameter = spins faster = charges more) with this kit, and the stock belt. I kept my smaller pulley on to eliminate potential charging problems.

The one they supply looks better I returned the pulleys. If I decide to buy them again, I'll save $32 by buying them elsewhere.

The gold underdriven pulley that doesn't match anything under the hood looks better than the OEM black one which matches EVERYTHING under the hood?

No, the black pulley that comes with the Steeda kit looks better than the silver pulley that is on the alternator right now.
