I cannot thank you guys enough for helping me...
I just bought a 67 Conv 6cyl with power steering. It had been sitting in a garden for two years. After cleaning out the gas tank, new oil and battery I managed to get it running (I love that challenge) I topped up the power steering unit and while the car was still running my friend got in and tried the steering. He turned the wheel a little to the right, then all hell broke loose.
It started to spin left to right really fast, I was in front and could see the wheels swing left to right basically going nuts. After 10 seconds of this my friend grabbed the steering wheel and "BANG" the piston broke away from the body :-(
Anyone know what might have happened ? Thank God I wasn't driving it. It acted like a speed wobble even thought it was in my garage.

Do I need a priest?

Thanks Again soooo much.

Ahhh... Been there before. The two hose located at the cylinder are crossed. Someone installed them backwards. Should have turned off the car before everything broke on you. Replace the bracket and switch the two hoses around. (Just on one side. Don't swap the whole hose, just one end. I'd hate to have to you change the hose and do the same thing over again.

Definitely crossed hose ends causing the fluid to go the wrong way through the lockout valves. Probably why the car was parked. I'm surprised the seller didn't fill you in on the mysterious steering problem.

lol ya, although it sounds like it hadnt been drive so they may have fixed the ps and then let it sit and never drove it, but it is the power steering hoses crossed for sure

It Worked .....

Thanks everyone.
PS: My friend did cut his hand when he tried to grab the wheel. If anyone has gone through this it a completely violent unexpected action. If it ever happens again I’m filling the trunk with water and throwing in my laundry.
