Ok, So I've done a search and it seems my lack of termanlogy is off a little. Evidently "dumps" are not what I'm looking for. I've had my 2 chambers sitting in my trunk for a little under 2 months now and am finally a proud owner of a brand new UPR O/R X that just arrived today. So I may get time to install the system on Firday but wanted to customize it a bit. I was out at the local drag strip this past weekend and another mustang owner was telling me his exhaust system had some kind of setup on it that had a split at the beginning of his x-pipe. The way I understand it is you have the normal O/R x setup and on the x, you can somehow install some sort of flanges with a cap on either side that simply screw on and off. So when you get to the track you unscrew the caps and it's like running straight headers. Is anyone familier with this? I don't think it would cause a back pressure issue as some of the exhaust would obviously still flow through the system.

You want to create backpressure after the collectors to create torque. Maybe on a high RPM Honda......

Sounds like he had cut-outs. One can get mechanical cut-outs (you get under and unbolt the covers) or cable operated ones. I have used the latter - it was cool for when I wanted to get on it, i just pulled the cable, which was on the side of the pass seat (this was not on a stang).

I have read of electrically operated cut outs too - never seen or used them though.

FWIW, my cutout (looked like a "Y") was sick loud.

The part that you are looking for is available through Jegs and I am assuming through summit as well. Why do you want to do this? Is it just for the sound or do you race your car on a serious level that you will benefit from open headers. My guess is that you will actually run better with your exhaust on compared to open headers

I do race Test and tune. Not really on a serious level. I just figured if it gave me a tenth or two then great. Figured since I was in hopes of installing this week that I'd check into it a bit to make it a one time deal.

Mc Cord Power Plate is what you're looking for. I bought an off road H pipe with a set of cutouts welded into it. (they have the bolt on cap which is what you need for the mc cord power plate) Then the Mc Cord power plate bolts over the opening and runs up to a switch which enables you to then open and close the cut outs from your seat. I'll see if I can find the site. If you want pix lemme kno, I still have em brandy new in the box from last yr (never got to install them, my baby died before she got equipped with em ) I never got to hear those longtubes open

Well, thanks for the input everyone. Seems I am at a COMPLETE standstill. I ordered the mufflers and x. What I didn't think about is the short (10"-12"?) pipe that has the flanges on one end that bolts onto the x and welds directly onto the mufllers on the other. Seems I can't find 2 1/2 peices for this? Where do I goI want the ones that are prebent. Can I take my 2 inch stock ones into a muffler shop and have some fabricated? The cars out of commission right now. I deleted the stock exhaust before verifying everything checked out ok. On the restriction (cutoffs) thought. I think I will pass. The info is appreciated. I deleted the stock exhaust and only clamped it back together just enough to get me home until I can get the new parts and I can feel a massive power loss with just the 1/4 leak.

i believe i have heard anything below 12 inches of aftercat piping will take away some torque...of course if you're adding steep gears to ur stang and want a loud ass sounds it wont make much difference...

Yea, I'm not moving much till I find out where to get these short 2 1/2" bent exhaust extentions from the back of the x to the mufflers.

It probably wont help you out, especially if you do it before the X pipe (the x pipe helps scavenging when done correctly).

As for those pipes you want, got to an exhaust shop, have them do it. If they are any good it will most likeley be a way better install then if you try to just bolt it on.

I don't know where you'd get one w/ the flanges, but you could cut the flanges off of your x pipe and use exhaust band clamps to attach 2 1/2 piping and just use a reducer at the end into the muffler if the muffler opening isn't 2 1/2". Or...you could go to a custom exhaust shop like suggested. What ever you do, I would not recommend welding your X Pipe to your pipes going to your muffler...cutting it off is a pain; that's why I used band clamps since my flanges were cut off due to leaking issues.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I haven't been to a muffler shop in a very long time. I checked one out locally, and the suggestion worked out perfectly. Guess most exhaust shops these days "or always for all I know" get most of there pipes straight and bend them themselves. I was told if I cut my old ones off and took them to them they would bend me up two more for $40.00. They also said they would make me tail pipes for $80.00. Not sure if they are of the same quality as brand name tail pipes.

the exhaust shop I go to said they can't make tailpipes to fit over the rear end...it is kinda a weird bend that bends up obviously to go over the rear end, but also bends out toward the side of the car to clear the gas tank. They told me they'd have to buy a set pre-made, so I just found a used set online and bought them myself.

If your exhaust shop can create those bends however, I do have my old set w/ nice stainless tips. The part of the pipe above the rear end rusted out, which is why I bought new ones, but the tips are fine. I can't see why they couldn't be welded onto a set of tailpipes.

Going to pull the old exhaust off tomorrow and take the parts I need to the shop to get 2 1/2 bent up. I don't really like the idea of a local muffler shop persoanlly bending my exhaust for me. Think maybe I will buy a pre-bent tail pipe setup. They all have to pass the same specs. Thanks again for the idea. At least I can get these short pipes I need.
