Hi, so I have been working on this 347 build... and unfortunately was laid off from a company I work for here in Ontario... not all bad news as I can finish my schooling... but I have my engine in a shop... So what the engine builder has done, is bore and hone the block, with a probe 347 kit, with twisted wedge specific pistons... what I would like to know is, after he finishes balancing, could I pick up the block with the kit installed and balanced... and install the heads myself.... or could or would decking be required for this install... If so.... because me and my dad are mechanically inclined and I have a engine hoist and stand.... could I just have the lower end kit installed and then do the rest including the heads and checking for piston to valve clearance myself. Or is it likely that machine work will need to be done... just because I don't really want to feel rushed with this one... like having a engine sitting in a shop with no parts.... he was going to mock it up and assemble the whole thing.... and he doesn't seem like he is in a huge rush... but I still would like to know if anyone knows if any other machine work would be necessary.. because if I could... to save on cost... would prefer assembling the rest at home... with no time constraints.....

any suggestions would be awesome!!

If ur wanting to save money, can turn a wrench and have some sort of knowledge of what ur doing, there is no reason that you can't assemble the rest of the long block. The heads are simple, clay it to make sure u have good ptv...... Install the heads, head studs are your friend here. Most including arp says to stretch the head bolts before you install the heads the final time. That means just torque them down in sequence 4-5 times. takes a while but your head gaskets will love you for it. Check all your clearances on the bottom end before putting on the oil pan, or if its already one, doen't hurt to check and make sure the block was clearances properly. Install the intake with the proper torque sequence, then bolt up the front accessories. You should be ok with this part of the project. Save some money, and take more pride in the fact that you did it yourself.

Aside getting the block decked, you can do the rest.

Sorry, forgot to mention that..... Decking the block/making sure its flat is very imporant.

Only thing u may need help with is rocker adjustment if you've never done it before.

You do not HAVE to have the block decked. Would it be ideal? Sure.

I have installed the same set of heads on the same block, both pre-decked and after being decked.

No problems either way.

You could install the cylinder heads easily.
