if its the same as an 86 it houses 3 1/2" speakers.... 86 and lower have horrible accoustics and even worse speaker locations... and thats with the premium sound.... i had a good sounding system in my 86 by fabbing other locations...

If I were you and you want the sound quality... I did a MB Quart component system with the crossovers and i have my tweeters in those holes up there... Sounds great.

i had 6 1/2 components in the kickpanels and my sub box incorporated 6x9's in separate chambers on the top sides.... i wish i kept those kick panels for my 87...in my 87 i had the great idea to gut out the stock 3 1/2 speakers and just set my tweeters on top of the magnet, and it was a great idea

In the small dash holes i have my tweeters, and in the door spots i have my (duno what they are called) regular speakers, but they both run wires to the crossover under the passenger seat. Sounds really good.

That is a good idea to put the tweeters up there as long as he is going to run 6 1/2" in the doors or maybe kick panel. The kits that come with the crossovers and detachable tweeters are nice I had Rockford Fosgates that were great. If you decide on the 3 1/2 watch the depth there are a few that may have bigger magnets....they may not fit flush with the dash. I would do what buddy said that is a good place to hide the little tweeters
