Dealer wants $120 just to clear OBD code!

I just got off the phone with an area dealer. I had the service engine soon light come on so I went to Autozone to run the OBDII codes. It came back as a bad crankshaft position sensor. I replaced it with no problem, but the service engine soon light still came on even after disconnecting the battery.

I called the dealer that I bought the sensor from and they said that disconnecting the battery doesn't work in this case, it has to be hooked up to a machine and have the error codes cleared and, get this, they want $120.00 just for that!

Can someone please tell me a way to clear my codes without going to the dealer? (I already tried disconnecting the battery, didn't work)

go to autozone and use their OBD reader to clear the code...or buy one for u, just bought mine for $99....

Do you know anybody with a Micro Tuner? I think you can clear the DTCs with one of those?

unless you get a prick, i asked one guy to do it there (since it had been done before at that location) & he got a attitude, & said "we don't clear codes". i argued with him for a minute then got pissed off, & was about to go down his throat. but i thought better of it & got in mt car & left. so i guess it's technically against their policy to do it, but if you are nice to the guys they will do it

BTW, I would have been really ticked if I got someone like you did, c2see21. Luckily, they've always happily pulled the codes and erased them if I asked them to.

And I hope I don't get a complete tool like c2see21 did because I'm not in the mood to argue and I just want this light gone

I can almost be certain that if acted nice and slipped the bastid a 10 spot they would do it no problem.

Not sure if this is still true, but if the key is cycled a certain number of times (I think it was 50 times) without the same sensor tripping, it would clear it's self.

Drive it for a week or two and see if it stops coming on. It'll be a lot cheaper to drive for a week or two than pay someone to clear it for you.

I have heard of this, in fact when I bought the part I aksed the guy if the light will go off right away and he said you may have to start it up a "few" times to clear it. Even the guy who wanted to charge me $120.00 said it "might" go away in its own. I didn't realize the cycle was 50 times though, thanks for the info. I'll wait a week or two before trying to bribe the guys at Autozone. Thanks!

I don't think that will clear them though.
