Following up on an earlier post, it occured to me (after extensive searching) that the reason my differential is chattering is probably because no friction modifier was added when the axles were removed to put in the longer studs (I don't know this for a fact, but I bet I'm right). I know it was added after the original install, because I was charged for it. The timing also coincides with when the noise started. So I've decided to drain the differential and add new fluid with FM.

My question - the counter guy at NAPA told me to use a gasket to seal the housing. I bought a Victor Reinz gasket on his advice. Now in searching a few threads, I see most people use black RTV. Can I still use the gasket without any leaking problems (filling with Valvoline 80w90 non-synthetic), or should I go with the RTV? Also, does anybody know torque specs for the housing bolts (I'm a chronic over-tightener)?

Thanks for your help, and happy new year!

Most people use just plain RTV silicone sealer. There is no need for the gasket. As far as it leaking... if everything is clean and the mounting surfaces are free of old gasket material, then technically no it shouldn't leak... I would just take the gasket back and get a tube of silicone and use that... Now for tightening bolts, 20ft/lb.. basically hand tight with a wrench. No tighter than say your oil pan drain bolt... What he said, I've never used a gasket and never had a leak. Good luck.

Stuck with the gasket

I'm a happy camper again. With the fresh gear oil + friction modifier, my differential is back to its quiet self. Everything looked fine inside.
