dipstick not in the block?

You could be losing oil as you are driving, conamination can get into your oil, or basically nothing...

mine has been loose for a while now, so i asked a guy at a nearby gas station to look at it this morning.
i think the guy at the gas station pulled it out today when i asked him to look at it, but i can't prove it. immediately upon leaving, i started getting lots of smoke under the hood from oil getting on the hot headers. it was definately not like that before. nor was it like that 3 months ago when the oil was changed (by someone else)
the guy at the gas station says it was never in there, that had only 2 quarts of oil when he drained it for the oil change, and that it will cost $250 to fix it.

i'm not driving it home today, that is for sure. i'll take the subway, and i'm not taking it back to that shop again.

$250 to fix?!?! thats BS... jack your car up, ram that tube back in the hole in the block, bolt the dipstick tube back to the headers, put some Silicone around the base of the tube, lower your car back down and drive away keep your $250

you can get a new dipstick for $30-50 and their super easy to install, slide it into the hole then mount it on a header bolt
can be done in less then an hour

what an a$$hole. the more i think about it the more i wish i was in the mafia or something. those bastards need to be taught a lesson.
the car is sitting in the middle of my parking lot at work right now
i'm going to the dealer tomorrow to get a new tube. i'll take my jack and blocks and shove it in in the parking lot.
anything to worry about if i have equal length headers?
i think that the guy who installed the headers messed up the tube during the install ... before i bought the car.

as a temp fix so you can drive it you can stick something in the hole, maybe a rolled up piece of duct tape but make sure it dosent fall into the hole, would be a bitch to get out

if it is shorter, then won't the dipstick go in farther, making you think you have more than you really have?Starman said:

I had the problem with the dipstick not staying in its hole after my header install. Eventually I bought one of those Lokar flexible ones and it works great. 
10/20 update:
the mother f$cker had told me that it was the wrong tube and that it didn't fit. after i said, "don't worry about it, i'll take care of it myself," they must have cut the tube in half, because it was in 2 pieces in the bag in the car, and the dipstick had also been broken.
so i brought in my blocks today, put the car up at lunch, and looked around. i found where the tube goes in and sure enough, the bottom part it fits exactly like it should.

if you just need to drive/move tje car i would stick the bottom part in and seal off the top so no oil escapes and park it untill you get your new tube
