I installed faux hood pins about 2 months ago... and already the lanyards are discolored a bit. They went from silver to a light rustish-colored hue. Both of them.

Bought them from American Muscle...

Wondering if anyone else has experienced this or can tell me what is happening to the lanyards. Is it rust?

Sounds like you got the faux stainless steel lanyards. Bummer.

According to the description, the lanyards are stainless. I would definitely send AMNick an email. Don't they have protective plastic over the lanyards to protect your hood? I would think that would keep them from discoloring as well. Nick will get you taken care of, one way or another.

Yes DarkFire... there are "protective" coverings on the lanyards. But apparently that didn't seem to make much difference.

I'll contact Am. Thanks for the info!

That is odd, because the lanyards are made out of stainless steel and we have not gotten any complaints about them before. Per my PM I am sending a replacement kit for you, and also a return tag for just the rusty lanyards so that we can take a look at them.

One thing to note, is if your car exposed to very salty conditions, IE winter road salt, salt spray or salty air/rain from an ocean, etc., this can cause even stainless steel to discolor or even rust unless special precautions are taken to clean and protect it.

Thanks,

Nick

I've seen stainless covered in rust. It can happen.

stainless can rust, but wont rust through. there are different grades of stainless and one is more corrosion resistant than the other.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stainless_steel

also search for 304 and 409 stainless for more info on the commonly used for automotive applications of SS.
