I am starting to get a little shaken....it seems as though right when I finish something up something else goes wrong. I just got my exhaust done and replaced all the power stearing hoses. I crank the motor and I can hear a nice loud tick tick tick tick tick....so I pull the valve cover off and everything looks ok, Im assuming its a lifter but Im not sure. My car really needed to be running and running well within a month but I dunno now. Well if it is a lifter I guess I might as well replace the cam also just so I feel there is some benefit of the down time.

Lol...

Don't get discouraged... I'm 99% sure what you have is an exhaust leak. Probably between the header and the head. An exhaust leak here can REALLY sound like a ticking lifter.

Double check that all of your bolts are tight... then check to make sure you didn't screw up the gasket.

Probably just alifter like you think. Try a little tranny fluid in the oil and only let it idle for a minute or so. See if it cleans it up and change the oil. Might be clogged.

I would take my bets on an exhaust leak too. I got one on my six the size of Rhode Island and it sounds like a few bad lifters.

Drain a quart out, and put a quart of ATF in. Gumout actually make a product for this, and it smells like it is 99% desiel fuel. It will clean out the oil passages and desolve the gunk. Because it thins out the oil, they say don't run the engine past idle. The lifter may be collapssed which means it will have to be replaced. You can just do that instead of the whole 9 yards with the new cam if you like. Pull the intake. If it is a lifter and if it is starved for oil, the degunking may help.

well its not the exhaust I just went through that...ill give the gumout or atf a try before I rip it apart

Be careful, don't just change one lifter, you may wipe out the cam lobe. If you plan on keeping the car do it right. You can also use kerosene or marvel mystery oil to clean out the lifter.

Before you try cleaning the lifter....do you have enough oil in the car? My wife's Rodeo sounded like it had a lifter going bad but come to find out she was 2.5 qts low.

Mechanics and me, have been changing out lifter for decades. Just because a lifter goes bad doesn't mean you have to change the cam.

Oz is right. Breaking in one lifter is no different than a whole set. Odds of wiping a lobe are practically nil.

well those "tricks" didnt work so I guess I will replace it, my intake just came in so Im half way there already . It will take me a few days to get the lifter, is it ok to drive for the time being?

Yes. Unless there is just an ungodly amount of slack, the pushrod and rocker arm should still be secure. Not too long though. I have changed push rods that were pointed on top from being loose too long.

Got to disagree with you fellows on putting a new lifter on an old cam. Check with comp cam, etc. Not recommended. But each to his own.

Let us know what the foot of the lifter looks like once you get it out. If there are any wear marks (grove or scratches) you'll need a cam.

Folks, do you honestly think that every time one of this lifters went bad we put in a whole new set plus a cam? Get real. The cam guys are in business to MAKE money, not save you money.

Comp Cams offers a warranty. They have to be careful.

Look at a new cam lobe surface and look at a new lifter. It's primarily the cam your are breaking in, not the lifters. While lifters will get a pattern to a particular lobe, you can replace lifters in singles or in sets with no problem. The only thing you want to avoid is swapping lifters from bore to bore or using used lifters.
