do 4.6 modular heads work on a 302???

the 4.6 heads are SOHC and a 302 is OHV. There is no way they would work on a 302

No possible way. Unless you're referring to the 'Cammer' Crate motor, which is a 5 liter, but it's still a modular block, not a 302.

I highly doubt you're referring to that anyway.

I don't know off hand what the bore spacing is for the Mod motors, but I'd just about bet the farm that it ain't the same as the small blocks, so in effect------- no way they'll work on a small block just for this reason. There were DOHC heads made for the small block back in the 60's for Indy racing, but there the cost would get you.

D. Hearne is talking about the Dan Gurney Eagle heads if I remember correctly and those are the only DOHC heads that will work but they require so much special equipment that they would never even fit in a Mustang and finding these heads today would be a real chore and $$$$. There was a company making DOHC heads for 302s about 7-8 years ago in prototype but I don't think they ever hit production.

Not referring top the Dan Gurney heads, the DOHC heads were Ford's creations. Dan Gurney's Eagle heads were either 2 valve or 3 valve pushrod heads. There is or was a company producing 4 valve heads called Dominion but these were also pushrod heads.

Now that you jogged my old memory you are right about the Dan Gurney heads, they were pushrod, and the Dominion heads are the others I was refering to and those were pushrod 4 valve heads.....I was thinking about heads with more than 2 valves per cylinder and not overhead cams.....sorry, it has been a long day in the sun and I'm really tired. I know better

You ain't tellin me nothin---- I spent the day outside also. Cut 1 1/2 acres of grass, then tore down a 370 truck motor to get the steel crank ( anyone want a good steel crank for their 429? ) and the CJ rods. Then spent 3 more hours trying to take a 3.8 V6 down to the heads to replace either the heads or gaskets. What a deal? Bought a 92 T-Bird for $600 that all's wrong is the heads or gaskets LOL

I'm confused about the 370 engine this is one I have never heard of.....did it come out of a dumptruck or a school bus? Is this some little rather obscure little brother of the 429 in the 385 family of engines?

Yea the 370 is a truck motor. Smaller bore than a 429, same as a 390 bore ( 4.05) and same stroke as the 429 ( 3.59) But it has a steel crank. Front snout needs to be turned down to use in a car , same as using the 391 crank in a 390 or 427

The standard bore of the 4.6 is something like 3.500"

Bore spacing on a 289-302 is 4.38". Bore spacing on a 4.6 is 3.937".

0r 10 cm bore spacing for you metric folks. Interesting how that comes out to a nice even number like that when converted to metric. It seems almost like the engineer put in a generic value with the intention of correcting it to say 11 cm (aprox 4.3 inch).


Oh well, a guy can wish.

The 370 is just a smaller bore version of the 429 truck motor. And yes this is a Lima crank. Same stroke as a 429 but but the crank is steel and the front snout is bigger in diameter, just turn it down and have the crank balanced for higher rpms and larger pistons

Hmmm....where did you get that 370 engine from, sounds like an iteresting engine. I might have to find me one and build a 429.

i think they were available in f-450 and up trucks, basically anything commercial, the basic idea was long stroke for torque and small bore for better fuel economy, i used to drive a gmc top-kick bobtail that had a 366 big block chevy truck motor and i beleive those had steel cranks as well, but i don't remember if the stroke was 454 or 396
