351C will have eight bolts in the valve covers. Casting numbers are located behind the starter.
It could also be a 351M.

You need to get a casting number. This 351 w will be a little different from a 302. They share heads and front covers. What about it is different?

Look around in your ash tray and between the seats etc., and see if you can find your caps lock key.

It's not a C. D4 was the last year they where made. You either have a Windsor, or a Modified.

Windsors have the thermostat housing on the front of the intake manifold. M's and C's have it on the front of the block.

M or C valve covers will be flat-ish on top. W's slope toward the outside of the motor.

So, other than the casting numbers (anything above D4), there's no other visual clues to tell a 351C apart from a 351M or 400M? Just curious, as I used to have a '76 Gran Torino with a SOMETHING, but never could tell for sure if it was a 351M or 400M (definitely wasn't a 351C because it was sluggish as all hell).

Cleveland motors have the eight valve cover bolts and the thermostat housing on the block like previously stated. Darkwriter, being that it was a 76 model it could have had a 460 and still be sluggish lol. Clevelands in this day and age arent that great, they have potential to make power but parts for them are few and far between i would take a windsor any day of the week.

Agreed, but I know for sure that it wasn't a 460. The car had been in the family since new, but gramps (the original owner) had long since passed, and Pops couldn't remember exactly what motor the car had come with - he kept trying to insist that it was a 351C when there was no way it could be, being a '76 model. Just couldn't figure how to determine the difference between a 400M and a 351M, visually, though. It'd be good to know for future reference, in case I go hunting for a Ranchero or something of that era that usually came with such a pig-heavy and sluggish torque-only motor in it.
