Ok i've only had the 96 gt for 2 months and the previous owner only had it for 8 months and he has no clue on anything on this mustang. i was thinking of possibly doing a head PI head swap in the future, but i was thinking what if it has been done already. Is there a way i can tell? i know the previous owner put a new manifold but thats all i know.

unless one of the previous owners did a head swap, you dont have them, but you probably knew that. most parts usually have the part number etched on it somewhere. im no 4.6 technician by any means, but its worth a shot. the pi head p/n is M-6049-P46. i dont even know where on the head it would be. the only other thing i can think of is getting a dyno run and see what type of power you're making. that or take it to a ford technician and ask, but you know how that can be dealing with them. sorry i couldnt be more help

I would "assume" you don not have them. If the car is stock anyway.

Simple test: Race a Maxima. If you win (or lose because you roasted the tires), you have a PI top end. If you get beat, you're still non-PI.

Take a look at the intake manifold and see what style it is. The PI versions have squarer looking runners at they meet the head near the injector, as you can see by these pictures.

PI

PI

NON PI

If you look behind the altenator, under the intake, isn't the PI deaper and fills up the entire 'V' of the motor, while the non-PI leaves quite a bit of room?

PI stands for "Performance Improved" and yes, the '99-up GT's had them.
